About the company

Institute on Aging (IOA) provides services and advocacy to help Bay Area seniors maintain independence and safety as they age. It runs home care and case management, Elder Abuse Prevention, The Friendship Line (a 24-hour suicide prevention warm line for seniors), adult day care for those with Alzheimer's and dementia, and the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), which combines medical care, physical therapy, and enrichment activities. IOA also offers CONNECT, a free community referral service for elder needs. Operating in San Francisco and surrounding regions (SF, Marin, San Mateo, Santa Clara, East Bay, the Peninsula, and parts of Riverside/San Bernardino), IOA differentiates itself through its integrated, community-based approach that combines direct care, crisis support, preventive programs, and navigation services to help older adults stay independent safely at home as long as possible.

What believers are saying

  • Sutter Health became IOA’s first exclusive presenting sponsor for the 2026 gala.
  • IOA keeps securing public money for elder-abuse prevention and AAPI-focused outreach.
  • IOA serves clients throughout California, expanding beyond San Francisco’s core donor base.

What critics are saying

  • San Francisco dependence is concentration risk; one grant runs through June 2029.
  • IOA’s safety-net services face staffing and volunteer burnout from 24/7 emotional support demands.
  • If Friendship Line funding tightens, IOA loses its most distinctive service and donor magnet.

What makes Institute on Aging unique

  • IOA runs the nation’s only accredited 24-hour toll-free Friendship Line for older adults.
  • San Francisco granted IOA $601,830 through 2029 for elder-abuse outreach and education.
  • IOA earned Candid’s 2026 Platinum Seal, signaling unusual nonprofit transparency.
