Operating margins expanded across all segments. GAAP operating margin increased 27 basis points to 4.94%, whilst non-GAAP operating margin grew 25 basis points to 7.21%. US dental merchandise sales climbed 8.3%, including 6.5% internal growth, with the company reporting market-share gains. Henry Schein (HSIC), a $9 billion healthcare distribution company, has underperformed the Nasdaq Composite despite recent gains. The stock is up 5.7% over three months, trailing the Nasdaq's 19.2% rise during the same period. Year-to-date, HSIC has gained 4.1% compared to the Nasdaq's 12.6% advance. The Melville, New York-based company, which supplies dental, medical and laboratory products to over one million customers, reported stronger-than-expected first-quarter results on 5 May. Adjusted earnings per share of $1.32 beat analyst estimates of $1.20, whilst revenue of $3.4 billion exceeded forecasts of $3.3 billion. Despite softer medical segment demand from a milder flu season, strength in Home Solutions and technology offerings offset the impact. The company expects full-year adjusted EPS between $5.23 and $5.37.
Eleven Black CEOs currently lead Fortune 500 companies, representing just 2% of America's largest corporations but marking a record high that has doubled since 2021. These companies collectively generated $432 billion in revenue and hold a combined market value of $405 billion. The roster includes Marvin Ellison of Lowe's, the first Black CEO to lead two different Fortune 500 companies, and Thasunda Brown Duckett of TIAA, one of only two Black women currently serving as Fortune 500 chief executives. Other leaders include Peter Akwaboah (Fannie Mae), Christopher Womack (Southern Company), and Calvin Butler (Exelon). Despite comprising 14% of the overall US workforce, Black employees represent only 7% of managers and 4-5% at senior levels, according to McKinsey research. Throughout Fortune 500 history, only 28 Black CEOs have led these companies.
Henry Schein reported first-quarter revenue of $3.37 billion, beating analyst estimates of $3.34 billion, with adjusted earnings per share of $1.32 surpassing expectations of $1.22. The healthcare distributor's performance was driven by strong gains in US dental and global technology segments. CEO Frederick Lowery attributed growth to market share gains and stable dental procedure volumes, supported by merchandise price increases and investments from dental service organisations. The medical business faced headwinds from a lighter flu season affecting point-of-care diagnostics. Analysts questioned gross margin sustainability amid rising oil prices and earnings growth prospects without restructuring. Management highlighted dynamic pricing and proprietary brand growth as margin protection strategies. The company reiterated full-year adjusted EPS guidance of $5.30 at the midpoint, with market capitalisation reaching $7.86 billion.
Henry Schein reported first-quarter 2026 earnings driven by strong US dental and global technology performance, offsetting weakness in medical due to a light flu season. The company recorded an $11 million remeasurement gain following acquisition of a controlling interest in S.I.N. 360. Gross margin expanded 28 basis points through strategic mix shifts towards corporate-owned brands and dynamic pricing. High-growth, high-margin businesses now represent nearly 50% of total operating income. Management committed to achieving a $125 million operating income improvement run rate by year-end 2026, targeting over $200 million in total annual improvements within a few years. The company expects high single-digit to low double-digit earnings growth, supported by US e-commerce rollout completion by August 2026. Rising oil prices present headwinds to freight and product costs, though management believes these can be mitigated through pricing adjustments.
