View

Cibola General Hospital is a nonprofit, government-owned 25-bed hospital that provides emergency, inpatient and outpatient care, surgery, and an ICU to residents of Grants and surrounding rural areas. Patients access services through a 24/7 emergency department, scheduled or unscheduled inpatient and outpatient care, diagnostic imaging, and laboratory testing, supported by modern technology. The hospital distinguishes itself through its focus on rural health as a community partner, governed by a local Board of Trustees, guided by CARE values, Joint Commission accreditation, and a 4-star rural rating. Its goal is to deliver compassionate, accessible, high-quality healthcare while promoting community wellness and health education.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • New Mexico awarded Cibola General Hospital Rural Health Care Delivery Fund support in August 2026.
  • The hospital won 2026 capital-outlay money for X-ray, mini C-arm, and ultrasound equipment.
  • Grant-funded primary-care expansion targets Cibola County, improving referral flow and patient capture.

What critics are saying

  • Leadership churn hit twice: Thomas Whelan exited in 2024, then Liz Sellers arrived in April 2026.
  • A 2025 interim-executive memo cited audit findings and revenue-cycle outsourcing, signaling control weaknesses.
  • If state grants stop after 2026, Cibola’s thin rural economics and Medicaid mix threaten service cuts.

What makes Cibola General Hospital unique

  • Cibola General Hospital is the only critical-access hospital serving Cibola County’s rural catchment.
  • Its 24/7 emergency department and surgical suites anchor local care that patients cannot replace nearby.
  • Joint Commission accreditation and a 4-star NRRS rating strengthen trust in a low-density market.
