Requirements
  • A high school diploma and one year of related experience, or certification in a related field such as medical laboratory assisting, or successful completion of an approved educational program such as WEMOCO or BOCES, is required.
  • Twelve months of related work experience in a health care setting or customer service field, including experience in related UR Medicine divisions such as Client Services, Phlebotomy, or Clinical Trials, or twelve months of successful performance as a temporary employee, is required; an equivalent combination of education and experience is accepted.
  • Ability to prioritize and maintain focus while performing multiple tasks is required.
  • Understanding of specimen preparation, specimen requirements, and equipment operations is required.
  • Ability to interpret requisitions and physicians’ scripts is required.
  • Professional discretion when handling confidential patient results is required.
  • Adherence to laboratory safety procedures and HIPAA regulations is required.
  • Proficiency with hospital and laboratory information systems, including the Electronic Medical Record System, Laboratory Information System (LIS), Pre-Analytical Automation Control Unit, and middleware, is required.
Responsibilities
  • Process information involving laboratory specimens, patient demographics, and patient billing information, and operate pre-analytical automation.
  • Follow written procedures and use judgment to ensure appropriate practices are followed.
  • Identify and process specimens while maintaining specimen integrity for laboratory testing.
  • Enter patient demographic and insurance information accurately into the electronic medical record, ensure all required fields are complete, understand requisition information requirements, and follow procedures.
  • Log patient and test information from requisitions into the Laboratory Information System (LIS); use the UR Medicine Labs Test Menu to verify acceptance criteria; read requisitions from different sources; recognize unacceptable specimen criteria and enter problem tests for resolution.
  • Receive pre-accessioned specimens into the LIS from varying sources, reconcile batch manifests, account for all specimens, identify specimen requirements, and document discrepancies or unacceptable criteria in the LIS.
  • Identify specialized testing requests, prioritize specimens to meet requested turnaround times, and triage samples received through the chute or drop-off window.
  • Prepare specimens and determine stability, volume, need for centrifugation, and aliquotting technique using judgment, prioritization, and the UR Medicine Test Menu to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Distribute specimens to the appropriate department for prompt analysis using judgment and prioritization.
  • Determine specimen priority and the volume of samples placed on the automation line; maintain proficiency in operational systems and middleware; monitor each automation module; and decide whether manual intervention is needed when errors occur.
  • Receive phone inquiries from providers, physicians, customers, and internal laboratory personnel; assess urgency and route inquiries appropriately.
  • Investigate problem specimens by contacting providers for resolution; use the LIS to enter complaints, document specimen requests, and address specimen-integrity issues.
  • Train other laboratory personnel on department-specific work as needed and under the direction of area leadership.
  • Travel between testing locations as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.
