Requirements
  • One to three years of experience providing peer support to people with psychiatric disabilities and/or co-occurring disorders is required.
  • Personal, first-hand experience as a recipient of the mental health system is required, including experiences such as psychiatric inpatient hospitalization, outpatient services or therapy, psychiatric medications, and/or participation in community mental health groups.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A valid driver's license is required at employment; incumbents must be at least 21 years old, have held a valid United States driver's license for at least one year, maintain adequate insurance when using a personal vehicle, maintain a safe driving record, and pass a driver's screening background check.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, climb, and perform other physically active duties.
  • Ability to lift at least 25 pounds using proper lifting techniques or a two-person lift.
  • Ability to operate a computer and office equipment such as a calculator, copier, and printer.
  • Ability to sit, reach, climb stairs, and maneuver through narrow spaces or hallways.
  • Ability to assist persons served with activities of daily living and remain stationary for up to 50% of the time as needed.
  • Ability to bend, reach, file, sit, stand, and move around the facility.
  • Ability to speak, hear, and communicate with persons served, staff, and external representatives.
  • Ability to perform the specified close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth vision tasks and adjust focus.
  • CPR certification is required within the first two weeks of hire.
  • First Aid certification is required within two weeks of hire.
  • Must become a Certified Peer Specialist or obtain a Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery Recovery Coach Academy certificate of completion within six months of hire.
Responsibilities
  • Initiate and conduct intake processes with Team LPHA Clinicians for all referred persons served within 72 hours.
  • Welcome, orient, and engage persons served to support their understanding of available services and support.
  • Build trusting relationships and support active involvement in ACCS.
  • Help persons served complete the 8 Dimensions of Wellness Assessment and Power Statement at intake.
  • Share personal experiences and provide support, education, and advocacy, particularly during service and life transitions.
  • Provide warm handoffs to other Team Peer Specialists for future work together.
  • Maintain close contact with persons served who struggle with initial or sustained engagement in ACCS.
  • Promote access to healthcare and employment services, safe housing, community tenure, self-sufficiency, and successful service completion.
  • Support choice, self-determination, participation, and decision-making in treatment, care coordination, and support services.
  • Facilitate Peer Support groups and connect persons served with psychiatric conditions and substance use or addiction to recovery tools and resources.
  • Implement Peer Support-oriented Treatment Plan interventions and complete documentation according to Certified Peer Specialist and applicable Codes of Ethics standards.
  • Help persons served develop self-advocacy skills individually and in groups.
  • Provide information and training on recovery and self-management plans and strategies, including facilitating completion of Wellness Recovery Action Plans individually or in groups.
  • Assist persons served in strengthening relationships with chosen family and friends.
  • Link persons served to community services and build Recovery and support networks outside the service system, including networks for people with co-occurring disorders and mutual-help or Recovery support groups.
  • Provide ongoing problem solving, skill training, and side-by-side support to improve daily living skills and abilities.
  • Model effective coping techniques and self-help strategies.
  • Teach, consult, and collaborate with team members to promote recovery values, language, and culture.
  • Onboard, orient, and coach new Team Peer Specialists through shadowing, review of Certified Peer Specialist and applicable Codes of Ethics, and related activities.
  • Use and model recovery-oriented, person-centered, motivational interviewing, harm-reduction, Housing First, Stages of Change, trauma-informed, culturally competent, and strengths-based approaches.
  • Perform, train, supervise, mentor, and model evidence-based recovery-oriented interventions, including Motivational Interviewing, Harm Reduction, Housing First, Stages of Change, and Wellness Recovery Action Plans.
  • Supervise Peer Specialists and provide training, guidance, and consultation to maintain the integrity of the Peer role and adherence to applicable ethical standards.
  • Help Peer Specialists resolve potential ethical conflicts, support their voice of Recovery in team interactions, and improve their effectiveness.
  • Communicate frequently with the Team Leader and meet regularly to review performance and resolve Peer Specialist performance issues.
  • Lead the Team's Peer Specialists' efforts to organize and deliver Peer Support to persons served.
  • Visit all GLE and SIE settings regularly to provide Peer Support.
  • Facilitate Wellness Recovery Action Plan groups.
  • Receive monthly and as-requested consultative and educative supervision, consultation, and training from the Director of Recovery Services.
  • Participate in the Lead Peer Specialist Community of Practice Workgroup for role competency development, learning, and feedback on policy, program development, and work decisions.
  • May co-facilitate the Peer Specialist Community of Practice Workgroup.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited school is strongly preferred.
  • An Associate's degree is strongly preferred.
