About the job

Requirements
  • Demonstrated experience owning the full Data Science lifecycle—including data, training, evaluation, deployment, serving, and ongoing operations—on production systems rather than only prototypes, including monitoring data drift, training/serving skew, and model degradation.
  • Strong working knowledge of data processing tools such as BigQuery (SQL), pandas, and Dataflow, or equivalents, and the ability to reason about data quality as a first-class concern.
  • Fluency in supervised and unsupervised learning, ranking models, recommendation systems, evaluation metrics, overfitting, and model selection.
  • Practical experience with GCP, including Vertex AI, BigQuery, and Dataflow, and AWS.
  • Strong production-grade Python skills and comfort working in a codebase where models and services are consumed by other engineers.
  • Experience leading the technical design of ML projects, articulating trade-offs, and driving decisions within a team.
Responsibilities
  • Teach and coach others, and create opportunities for colleagues within the team and wider organisation to share and develop expertise.
  • Act as a technical leader and consultant on ML within the team's domain, raising the quality bar for defining and solving ML problems.
  • Collaborate across craft boundaries with data scientists and software engineers so the team operates as one cross-craft unit.
  • Promote realistic team commitments and openly share trade-offs, uncertainties, and technical risks.
  • Represent ML thinking in conversations with product managers, data analysts, and consuming engineering teams.
  • Own the full ML lifecycle, from problem framing and data exploration through training, evaluation, deployment, and monitoring, on production systems affecting revenue and customer experience.
  • Make design decisions on ML/AI components in the portfolio, explicitly weighing technical, cost, and product implications.
  • Break work into incremental, reversible steps that deliver value early and reduce risk.
  • Handle production incidents and degradations by diagnosing root causes and resolving them at the appropriate speed.
  • Deliver autonomously and contribute to the team's technical direction.
  • Maintain production-system health and develop reusable platform building blocks based on real problems rather than speculative needs.
  • Analyse production ML systems, identify failure modes, and drive data-grounded improvements.
  • Design and implement experiments to validate hypotheses, from offline evaluation through live AB tests.
  • Identify the underlying problem and translate business requirements into appropriately scoped ML problems.
  • Surface data-driven insights to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Raise data quality standards across team pipelines and ensure data is reliable and well understood.
  • Apply domain knowledge to make sound design decisions across the team's ML portfolio.
  • Identify opportunities to simplify live systems, reduce support burden and costs, and build leverage, such as replacing bespoke models with a configurable engine.
  • Apply suitable testing and de-risking principles, especially for systems with direct business impact.
  • Investigate and resolve production issues, raising awareness when issues extend beyond the team.
  • Collaborate with the Engineering Manager and Data Science leads on the platform's technical direction.
  • Understand consuming teams' needs and design building blocks that serve them without creating new dependencies.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with LLM-based systems, including retrieval-augmented generation, structured generation, evaluation, and cost management, particularly on GCP/Vertex AI or similar.
  • Experience building or contributing to shared ML infrastructure or internal platforms, such as feature stores, serving layers, and shared pipelines.
  • Familiarity with recommendation systems, personalisation, or search ranking at scale.
  • Experience working in a cross-craft team alongside software engineers and data scientists.
  • Understanding of AB testing methodology and experimentation platforms.
  • Familiarity with Java.

Juicy Marbles launches $5.19 plant-based Bangers with 'butcher-minced' texture exclusively on Ocado

Juicy Marbles launches Butcher-Minced Bangers exclusively with UK online retailer Ocado on 31 July. The plant-based sausages are priced at £4.09 for a pack of six. The company says its new product differs from standard plant-based sausages by using a "butcher-minced" technique. Instead of emulsifying proteins and fats, Juicy Marbles minces its own plant-based whole cuts and includes visible fat cubes that melt during cooking. Co-founder Luka Sinček explains the company wanted to give plant-based sausages an "experiential overhaul" by employing traditional butcher techniques. The bangers feature a coarse-ground structure designed to replicate the texture of butcher-made sausages. The product contains 12.4g of protein per 100g, zero preservatives, and is a source of iron, B12, and fibre. Cooking time is six to eight minutes.

Ocado to create hundreds of jobs at new 55,000 sq ft Stoke-on-Trent base

Online grocery firm Ocado is creating hundreds of jobs at a new 55,000 sq ft facility in Stoke-on-Trent. The company has secured a 15-year lease for the unit at Indurent Park Stoke Central, near the A500, taking the final available space at the site. The facility, equipped with solar panels and electric vehicle charging capabilities, is expected to become operational later this year. Danny Kennedy from Ocado said the site will enable the company to deliver to more customers whilst creating hundreds of new positions. The announcement comes months after Ocado Group revealed plans in February to cut 1,000 jobs globally, representing approximately 5% of its 20,000-strong workforce, as part of a restructuring programme.
