US oil reserves hit 40-year low as Brent crude rallies 5% and Nvidia launches $500B AI funding push

US crude oil stockpiles in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve have fallen below 300 million barrels for the first time in over 40 years. The reserve dropped by 6.1 million barrels to 298.7 million barrels last week, according to Department of Energy data released Monday. President Trump ordered the release of 172 million barrels in March after Iran disrupted oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz. International benchmark Brent rose around 5% to $87.72 per barrel on Monday, whilst US West Texas Intermediate futures climbed about 5% to close at $82.13 per barrel. Meanwhile, Nvidia announced plans with six asset firms to mobilise over $500 billion in third-party capital for hyperscalers and AI labs. The initiative aims to help customers acquire Nvidia hardware without using their own balance sheets.

Meta backs open-source AI while other labs close their models

Meta Platforms launched a new AI model on Monday with an open-source licence, allowing other software developers to use it freely. CEO Mark Zuckerberg warned against concentrating advanced AI control within a few companies, institutions, or governments. The tech company released Muse Glimmer, a lightweight AI model that runs on personal computers, and will provide access to a more powerful model, Muse Spark 1.2. Meta has long championed open-source AI development, contrasting with rivals like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. In an essay, Zuckerberg argued that open source ensures fairer AI development and keeps the US competitive against rivals like China. He suggested policymakers reconsider their stance on "distillation" — training less capable models from stronger ones. Zuckerberg stated restricting learning from observable information could hinder US leadership in AI.

Meta's Zuckerberg attacks OpenAI and Anthropic in 6,500-word open-source AI essay

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg published a 6,500-word essay on 10 August that appears to criticise OpenAI and Anthropic, though he doesn't name them explicitly. The essay defends open-source AI models, which Zuckerberg argues are safer from a cybersecurity perspective because more people can identify vulnerabilities. The piece comes as Meta launches Muse Glimmer, a group of open-source models for laptop use, and plans to open the weights on its latest AI model, Spark 1.2. Zuckerberg recently told the New York Times that OpenAI and Anthropic are centralising power in ways that harm innovation. OpenAI and Anthropic use proprietary, closed-loop models, whilst Meta advocates for open-source alternatives. Meta's shares have struggled this year as the company increases capital expenditures.

Meta unveils new AI models in push for 'personal superintelligence

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced the rollout of new artificial intelligence models as part of the company's push towards "personal superintelligence". The announcement signals Meta's continued expansion in AI development. The new models represent Meta's latest effort to advance AI capabilities across its platforms. Zuckerberg shared the news on Instagram, indicating the company's focus on making advanced AI systems more accessible to users. The move comes as major technology companies compete to develop and deploy increasingly sophisticated AI systems. Meta has been investing heavily in AI infrastructure and research to maintain its position in the sector. Further details about the specific capabilities and deployment timeline of the new AI models were not disclosed in the announcement.

Meta unveils open AI vision as Intel raises $15B in stock sale

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg published a manifesto outlining his vision for artificial intelligence, arguing against concentrating control of superintelligence in the hands of a few experts. He advocated for democratising AI access, stating that people should decide what matters in their own lives rather than having a small group determine what's best for humanity. Alongside the manifesto, Meta announced Muse Glimmer, an open weights model that users can download and run on their own devices. Separately, Intel said it will sell $15 billion in common stock to fund its growth amidst rising demand for its chips driven by the AI boom. Tech stocks fell in early trading Monday following these announcements.
