  • Zero to three years of hands-on product or hardware experience through internships, co-ops, student design teams, research, or personal projects.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals and the ability to use them to solve open-ended design problems.
  • Proficiency in 3D computer-aided design (CAD), including building multi-part assemblies, using CATIA, SolidWorks, NX, Creo, or similar software.
  • Familiarity with common manufacturing processes such as injection molding, CNC machining, casting, or sheet metal, and how they affect design decisions.
  • Ability to create clear mechanical drawings, or eagerness to build this skill with mentorship.
  • Curiosity, attention to detail, and interest in well-designed hardware.
  • A collaborative mindset and comfort working in a fast-paced environment where priorities shift.

Responsibilities

  • Design mechanical parts and assemblies for aircraft, ground stations, and accessories, working alongside senior engineers on new architectures and taking ownership of components as experience grows.

  • Work with vendors on technical questions and part reviews, in collaboration with operations and supply chain teams.
  • Plan and run engineering tests, and use analysis to evaluate design trade-offs and verify that parts perform as intended.
  • Follow designs through the full development cycle, from early prototypes to pre-production and mass production, and help manufacturing teams with assembly processes and quality and inspection criteria.
  • Investigate and debug failures, identifying root causes.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with CATIA.
  • Exposure to geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), tolerance analysis, or finite element analysis (FEA).
  • Experience with composites or electromechanical systems such as drones, consumer electronics, or robotics.
  • Experience rapidly prototyping with 3D printing, machine shop tools, or similar.

About the Company

Skydio

Builds autonomous drones for work in dangerous places

Skydio builds autonomous drones for public safety agencies, utilities and military teams that need images and information from dangerous or hard-to-reach places. Its flying robots span outdoor inspection, indoor reconnaissance and longer-range response missions, with visual and thermal cameras to capture conditions on the ground. Operators use its Command software to plan missions, launch aircraft from remote docks and turn repeated flights into inspection records or live views of emergencies. Skydio sells the aircraft, software subscriptions and support services to organizations directly and through resellers. Founded in 2014, it is headquartered in San Mateo, California, United States.
