Responsibilities
  • Prepare firefighting foam formulations according to written formulation sheets, procedures, and established protocols.
  • Accurately measure, mix, label, and handle raw materials and samples while maintaining consistency and attention to detail.
  • Prepare Vorbeck formulations, competitive products, and other samples to support product development, evaluation, and testing.
  • Perform routine analytical and performance testing on firefighting foam formulations, competitive products, raw materials, and developmental samples.
  • Operate relevant laboratory and testing equipment and accurately document test conditions, observations, measurements, and results.
  • Follow established standard operating procedures, testing methods, and documentation requirements to maintain accurate and traceable laboratory data.
  • Support internal research and product development projects by preparing experiments, conducting assigned testing, collecting data, and communicating observations and results to scientists, engineers, and other technical team members.
  • Recognize unexpected results or testing observations and communicate findings to the appropriate team members.
  • Contribute ideas that may improve testing methods, laboratory processes, and overall efficiency.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, organized, and efficient laboratory environment by following established safety procedures and properly utilizing required personal protective equipment.
  • Properly handle, store, and dispose of laboratory materials and assist with maintaining laboratory supplies, equipment, samples, and workspaces.
  • Work collaboratively with scientists, engineers, technicians, and other team members to support laboratory priorities and project timelines.
  • Participate in training and cross-training across relevant laboratory procedures, equipment, and testing methods.
  • Build technical proficiency and take on greater independence as knowledge of the company's products, processes, and laboratory methods develops.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support organizational goals and business needs.
Desired Qualifications
  • Academic laboratory, internship, research, capstone, or other hands-on technical experience is beneficial.
  • Previous experience working in a chemistry, formulation, materials science, or product development laboratory is preferred but not required.
  • Genuine interest in hands-on laboratory work, product development, and applied research.
  • Eagerness to learn new laboratory techniques, testing methods, equipment, and technical concepts.
  • Effective organizational and time-management skills.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to ask questions, receive feedback, and apply training to future work.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a technical team while developing greater independence.

Vorbeck Materials opens manufacturing facility. May 12, 2026 Facility will provide UND students with employment, experiential learning opportunities Last week, campus and community leaders cut the ribbon of a manufacturing facility that will provide experiential learning opportunities for UND students, while also bolstering the region's economy. On May 6, Vorbeck Materials - a Maryland-based manufacturer of products for clients spanning the defense, aerospace and first responder industries - opened its new, 47,000 square foot campus in Grand Forks. Tyler Sletten, director of operations for Vorbeck, opened the event. Sletten, who previously worked at UND's Center for Innovation, reminisced on meeting company leadership for the first time. "When I sat in the boardroom at CFI and learned about Vorbeck, I came away knowing that we had to have this company in Grand Forks," he said. Vorbeck CEO John Lettow added that the "national and global level talent at UND" was a major factor in choosing to build its manufacturing facility in Grand Forks. "The first thing we noticed about this area is that it has a fantastically connected business ecosystem," Lettow said. "Then there is UND. It is an incredible asset to this community. It has excellent programs - national security, the Research Institute for Autonomous Systems, UAS and growing space programs. It's just an ideal place that we are honored to be." North Dakota U.S. Sen. John Hoeven cited rising enrollment at UND - and Vorbeck's partnership with the College of Engineering & Mines to provide internship opportunities - as a boon to the region's workforce. "Think about what this means for recruiting people to live in North Dakota, in this exciting, growing economy," Hoeven said. Following the ribbon-cutting, members of the Grand Forks Fire Department demonstrated the capabilities of Vorbeck's firefighting foam by extinguishing a simulated fire.
