Requirements
- Graduate of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing for the Nurse Practitioner track.
- National certification by one of the recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Certification Centers for the Nurse Practitioner track.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia for the Nurse Practitioner track.
- CNOR certification for the Nurse Practitioner track.
- Bachelor’s Degree as a Physician Assistant or Master’s Degree as a Physician Assistant for the Physician Assistant track.
- Graduate of an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant approved Physician Assistant training program for the Physician Assistant track.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants for the Physician Assistant track.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine for the Physician Assistant track.
- Basic Life Support certification is required, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department.
- Licensure or certification must support healthcare services consistent with state law and applicable hospital privileges.
- Ability to perform work requiring lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, positioning, and carrying patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
- Proficiency with computers.
- Strong communication skills.
Responsibilities
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for orthopedic patients and their families during inpatient hospitalization and immediately after discharge in the ambulatory setting.
- Complete daily rounds, consultations, and pre-procedure evaluations.
- Complete integrated assessments.
- Order additional tests or consultations in collaboration with orthopedic faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal patient evaluation findings.
- Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
- Facilitate patient discharge by coordinating services and tests needed before discharge and for outpatient follow-up appointments.
- Develop individualized orthopedic patient care plans, including teaching, discharge planning, and referrals to other healthcare team members.
- Provide care for patients across the age continuum within the scope of educational experience and certification.
- Identify unstable or complex orthopedic care situations and facilitate appropriate intervention in clinic or hospital settings.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate orthopedic patients and coordinate follow-up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting.
- Assist with collecting outcome measures.
- Apply critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision-making to identify, evaluate, and manage the needs of patients and families.
- Use equipment safely.
- Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, standards of care, and research findings.
- Provide education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using appropriate teaching strategies.
- Promote an environment that supports learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
- Maintain and update professional knowledge throughout the year.
- Complete all identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for orthopedic patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in the area of expertise.
- Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate in the area of expertise.
- Document the plan of care, interventions, and evaluations clearly and concisely in the patient’s medical record according to approved policies and documentation standards.
- Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient-outcome improvements in care.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in orthopedic practice that improve patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to solve problems and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
- Promote innovation in the expanded role of care delivery to orthopedic patients and families in inpatient and ambulatory settings.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
- Review and interpret orthopedic data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes as necessary.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
- Assist orthopedic faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
- Perform other assigned duties and projects.
