Requirements
  • A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of experience and training is required.
  • A passing score on the department’s written examination and vision test is required.
  • A passing time on the physical agility test is required.
  • Successful completion of a polygraph test evaluating employment history, criminal history, drug use, and other job-related background disqualifiers is required.
  • Candidates must be classified as fit for employment by the Occupational Health Office and pass the department’s annual physical assessment test.
  • Candidates must refrain from using all tobacco products on and off the job.
  • A current and valid driver’s license is required.
  • Certified Firefighter applicants must possess Firefighter I and Firefighter II certification through IFSAC or ProBoard.
  • Certified Firefighter applicants must possess FEMA/ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 certifications.
  • Certified Firefighter applicants must possess an Emergency Vehicle Operator’s Course certification.
  • Certified Firefighter applicants must possess CPR certification.
  • Certified Firefighter applicants must possess Hazmat Operations certification.
  • Certified Firefighter applicants must possess either a Virginia EMT certification or National Registry certification; another state’s EMT certificate is not accepted.
  • Employees may be required to work beyond normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs or citywide emergencies.
  • Employees may be required to wear and maintain designated personal protective equipment in areas of risk.
  • The position is safety-sensitive and subject to random drug testing.
Responsibilities
  • Complete the department’s multistep hiring process, including the online application, written test, Candidate Physical Ability Test, personal history questionnaire and reference checks, structured oral interviews, pre-assessment physicals and psychological evaluations, background checks, and final offers.
  • Participate in the fire academy if selected for the Firefighter Recruit track or the condensed certified academy if selected for the Certified Firefighter track.
  • Perform firefighter duties for the City of Virginia Beach Fire Department.
