About the job

Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, biomechanics, or materials science is required; equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Three years of relevant experience are required.
  • Experience with development or deployment on Azure, AWS, or another cloud platform is required.
  • Experience with statistical programming and data visualization using R/Bioconductor, and UNIX/Linux programming, is required.
  • Experience with interface, networking, and data warehousing technologies, relational database design, and performance tuning is required.
  • Ability to execute multiple work streams and produce consistent results is required.
  • Ability to create novel techniques, programs, and systems by innovating or synthesizing features from other systems, databases, or programs across inception, design, testing, implementation, evaluation, and ongoing development is required.
  • Ability to create interrelated experiments, programs, or systems that build upon prior work and proceed in scientific succession is required.
  • Competency with Python, Java, Perl, C++, and cloud computing is required.
Responsibilities
  • Contribute to scientific analysis and interpretation of data from multiple musculoskeletal research projects by organizing, overseeing, and directing assigned Biomechanical Testing Core staff and trainees.
  • Initiate, monitor, and evaluate project progress, methodological quality, scientific value, and associated datasets.
  • Exercise independent scientific and technical judgment in experimental design, analytical method development, interpretation of findings, and resolution of complex research problems.
  • Ensure quality control of raw biomechanical data and assist investigators with analysis from data generation through publication.
  • Integrate mechanical testing, imaging, specimen geometry, and other experimental datasets into quantitative models of tissue structure and function.
  • Develop, validate, and maintain computational workflows for on-premises and cloud processing.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with investigators, research cores, institutional computing teams, external partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Provide technical supervision, research consultation, and training, and develop educational materials on specialized experimental and computational methods.
  • Collaborate independently with investigators to define research questions, experimental designs, testing strategies, analytical approaches, deliverables, and timelines.
  • Evaluate the feasibility and limitations of proposed methods, recommend controls and quality criteria, coordinate concurrent projects, monitor milestones, interpret emerging findings, and recommend methodological changes or follow-up experiments in consultation with investigators.
  • Develop and apply computational and statistical methods to process, analyze, visualize, and interpret biomechanical data.
  • Establish reproducible procedures for signal processing, identifying testing artifacts, calculating structural and material properties, and comparing experimental groups.
  • Integrate mechanical outcomes with imaging, geometry, specimen metadata, and other relevant measurements; evaluate analytical assumptions; and communicate findings and limitations through consultations, reports, figures, manuscripts, abstracts, and grant materials.
  • Design, implement, test, document, and maintain reusable software and automated workflows for instrument-data ingestion, quality control, analysis, visualization, and reporting.
  • Use scientific programming languages, open-source tools, and version control to support reproducibility and reliable deployment.
  • Collaborate with institutional research computing and information technology personnel to develop workflows for local and approved cloud infrastructure, including appropriate storage, access, and computational resources.
  • Establish and maintain standards for raw and processed data, specimen identifiers, metadata, analytical records, and workflow documentation.
  • Develop procedures preserving traceability from specimen preparation and instrument output to reported results; oversee data organization, storage, backup, retrieval, and access according to institutional requirements.
  • Review data completeness and quality, investigate discrepancies, and implement corrective actions.
  • Provide technical training, supervision, and consultation to CMSR research groups, assigned Biomechanical Testing Core staff, students, and trainees.
  • Develop instructional materials, digital manuals, standard operating procedures, and example workflows.
  • Oversee scheduling, specimen intake and tracking, project records, supply and fixture inventories, and service documentation supporting core operations and internal billing.
  • Establish and monitor instrument performance and calibration checks; troubleshoot equipment and software problems; and coordinate maintenance, repairs, upgrades, and vendor support.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend improvements based on scientific needs, performance, reliability, and resource requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A master's degree is preferred.
  • Experience with web interface, design, and development; JavaScript; Python/Flask or related programming; and source control tools such as Git is preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic statistics, linear model building, principal component analysis, and factor analysis is preferred.
  • Experience conducting biomechanical, mechanical, materials, or tissue testing, including experimental planning, specimen preparation, instrument operation, troubleshooting, and quantitative analysis, is preferred.
  • Experience with instrument-data interfaces, structured data storage, relational databases or comparable research data systems, and integration of heterogeneous datasets is preferred.
  • Ability to develop and validate new experimental methods, analytical programs, or research systems through design, testing, implementation, evaluation, and improvement is preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, meet milestones, maintain rigorous documentation, and deliver reliable results is preferred.
  • Experience providing technical training, coordinating others' work, and communicating complex methods and findings to collaborators with varied technical backgrounds is preferred.
  • Ability to handle animal tissues, human cadaveric materials, and other biological specimens in accordance with applicable institutional requirements and approved protocols is preferred.
  • Proficiency in scientific programming and data visualization using Python, R, MATLAB, or comparable platforms, including development of automated and reproducible analytical workflows, is preferred.
  • Experience with statistical programming and data visualization using R/Bioconductor and large language models is preferred.
