Requirements
- An Associate of Science degree is required.
- Two years of experience in the human service or mental health field is preferred, with licensing potentially required based on assignment.
- One year of experience in dog handling, dog training, or kennel work is desirable, particularly with assistance dogs.
- Experience working in or knowledge of the assistance dog field is preferred.
- A background in teaching or human health services related to disabilities, particularly Veterans’ mental health or mobility, is preferred.
- A strong desire to teach dogs to help people.
- Knowledge of or interest in teaching people to train puppies and dogs using positive methods.
- Knowledge of or interest in understanding and working with active-duty and Veteran military personnel with physical and psychological injuries.
- Knowledge of or interest in symptomatology related to Post-Traumatic Stress acquired from military deployments and other circumstances.
- A behavioral science board license may be required based on assignment.
- Accurate reporting and record keeping.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to make presentations to the general public or other interested parties.
- Ability to complete location-specific requirements, which may include TB testing, vaccinations, and background checks for clearance to military bases and service locations.
- Willingness to complete required vaccines, TB testing, and paperwork for military base access.
- Willingness and ability to travel to Oregon for a seven-week training seminar.
- Compatibility with Paws for Purple Hearts’ direction and purpose.
Responsibilities
- Assist, as assigned and under close supervision of the Senior Program Instructor and direction of the National Dog Program Director, with implementation and maintenance of the Paws for Purple Hearts Assistance Dog Training Program and specialty management roles appropriate to each regional site.
- Assist, as assigned and under close supervision of the Senior Program Instructor and direction of the National Dog Program Director, with the concept of dogs helping Veterans, active-duty military personnel, and other military personnel.
- Assist, as assigned and under close supervision of the Senior Program Instructor and direction of the National Dog Program Director, in developing an influential stakeholders group to complement and sustain the program.
- Complete continuing professional education, including attending Bergin College of Canine Studies’ seven-week seminar when instructed for job promotional purposes.
- Maintain commitment to Paws for Purple Hearts’ mission, goals, and objectives.
- Perform other duties assigned by the Senior Program Instructor and approved by the National Dog Program Director, Site Manager, Regional Director, or responsible national staff.
