Velo3D campus to provide components for defense, aerospace and energy sectors Fremont-based company Velo3D has primed its first facility in Livermore where it is set to manufacture 3D-printed metal parts for strategic industries. Spanning nearly 289,000 square feet, the new campus dubbed Forge 1 is set to be among the largest metal additive manufacturing facilities in North America, according to company officials. A ribbon-cutting ceremony for Forge 1 was held July 15, but the company is poised to begin operations in phases as its systems are installed. "Forge 1 is much more than a new production facility," Velo3D CEO Arun Jeldi said in a statement announcing the campus opening. "It represents our commitment to helping customers and our nation build a stronger, more resilient manufacturing foundation." Velo3D created Forge 1 in response to growing demand from industries such as aerospace, defense and energy to scale up the production of pertinant metal parts domestically. At the new campus, there is about 270,000 square feet of production space and infrastructure to support over 40 large-format metal additive manufacturing systems, according to Velo3D officials. These systems will print 3D metal components. Velo3D can expand its fleet of systems to over 100 systems, according to company officials. Overall, work at Forge 1 is set to support machine assembly, production-scale printing, post-processing, inspection, quality assurance and customer acceptance, Velo3D officials said. Between the company headquarters in Fremont and Forge 1, located at 711 Challenger St., Velo3D officials expect to operate a total of up to 125 metal additive manufacturing systems. The company's headquarters in Fremont will continue to serve as the locus of research and development, applications engineering, process development, customer collaboration and qualification, according to the statement. Velo3D's investment in Livermore creates high-skilled manufacturing careers, strengthens the local supply chain and generates tax revenue that supports essential community services, Livermore Mayor John Marchand told Livermore Vine.
