Requirements
  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
  • Current membership in the South Carolina Bar Association.
  • Valid state driver's license.
  • A short demonstration of experience up to and including one month.
  • Availability to be on-call 24/7.
Responsibilities
  • Assist in coordinating and supervising the activities of the Solicitor’s Office and coordinating office resources to ensure the prosecution of cases in a proper, efficient and orderly manner.
  • Supervise subordinate support staff as assigned, including instructing, assigning, reviewing and planning work, maintaining standards, coordinating activities, and acting on employee problems.
  • Review the work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy; evaluate and make recommendations as appropriate; and offer training, advice and assistance as needed.
  • Interpret and implement complex legal issues within office policy and the doctrine of legal ethics.
  • Review criminal incident reports from all law enforcement agencies that operate in Richland County.
  • Prepare and try criminal cases; prepare indictments; conduct pre-trial conferences; negotiate with attorneys; diagnose cases and determine case strategies; conduct preliminary hearings; participate in case investigation, including crime scene investigation, interviewing witnesses and victims, and examining evidence; research legal issues affecting cases; apply the law to facts of a criminal case; determine the desired sentence; evaluate and prepare witnesses for trial; and select juries.
  • Prepare bench warrants, affidavits, search warrants, legal briefs, motions, orders, petitions, subpoenas, court dockets, indictments, guilty plea sheets, agreements, and other legal documents.
  • Present and argue prepared cases in court as assigned.
  • Work closely with victim advocates to ensure that services are provided in compliance with the Victim’s Bill of Rights.
  • Assist law enforcement agencies requiring legal advice about the investigation of criminal matters.
  • Receive and respond to client or public inquiries, concerns, and complaints in areas of responsibility.
  • Assist in coordinating department activities and functions with those of other County Departments, municipalities, and outside agencies as appropriate.
  • Plan and give presentations to community and civic organizations as requested.
  • Maintain files; compile data for and prepare reports and statistics required by the Department, County, or other agencies.
  • Attend professional conferences, training, seminars, and workshops as necessary to maintain job knowledge and skills.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
