September 16, 2026 SPRINGFIELD, Mass - Baystate Health announced today that Dr. Agnes McAuliffe has been named Medical Director of the Sister Caritas Cancer Center at the future Baystate Mercy Hospital. The planned transition of Mercy Medical Center to Baystate Health on November 1, 2026, is subject to regulatory approvals. "Dr. McAuliffe's compassionate, patient-centered approach and strong commitment to delivering safe, high-quality care make her an outstanding leader for this important role," said Dr. Rawad Elias, Vice President and Medical Director, Cancer Services, Baystate Health. Dr. McAuliffe brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her new role. She is triple board-certified in internal medicine, hematology, and medical oncology. Dr. McAuliffe completed the honors program at the University of Connecticut as a presidential scholar. She earned her medical degree at the University of New England in Maine, then returned to the University of Connecticut for her internal medicine residency and oncology and hematology fellowship training. Aug 05, 2026, 10:15 ET * Event brings hands-on car seat safety education and inspections to local families * Hyundai contributes $25,000 to Baystate Health Foundation's Pediatric Trauma Surgery Injury Prevention Car Seat Program HOLYOKE, Mass., Aug. 5, 2026 /PRNewswire/ - Hyundai Motor America, in partnership with Baystate Health Foundation and Gary Rome Hyundai, recently hosted a car seat safety check event focused on helping families better protect their children on the road. The event provided free, hands-on education and inspections conducted by certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians (CPSTs). As part of its corporate social responsibility initiative, Hyundai Hope, Hyundai donated $25,000 to Baystate Health Foundation to support its Pediatric Trauma Surgery Injury Prevention Car Seat Program. The funding will help provide car and booster seats to families in need, further expanding access to critical safety resources in the community. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that correctly installed car seats can dramatically improve child passenger safety, lowering the risk of fatal injury by 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers. Despite these benefits, installation errors remain common, with nearly one in two car seats not being used as intended. During the event, CPSTs guided parents and caregivers through proper car seat installation and use, while also checking each seat for expiration dates, recalls, and correct fit. Families requiring new car seats received replacements on-site to help ensure safe travel for children in the community. Since the partnership began in 2023, more than 240 car and booster seats have been distributed to families in need through the program, reinforcing a shared commitment to child passenger safety and community well-being. Gary Rome Hyundai, Baystate Health team up for car seat safety. Posted: Aug 2, 2026 / 03:15 PM EDT Updated: Aug 2, 2026 / 03:15 PM EDT SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Gary Rome Hyundai collaborated with Baystate Health on Sunday to host a car seat safety event aimed at protecting children on the road. The event provided parents with tools and professional inspections to ensure their children are properly restrained. Proper installation is considered a critical safety measure, as health officials identified improper car seat setup as a leading factor in child fatalities and injuries during car crashes. The event focused on identifying common errors and replacing faulty equipment to mitigate these risks. Dr. Kala Frye Bourque, the director of pediatric injury prevention at Baystate Health, provided specific data on how correct restraint impacts child safety. "In infants and toddlers, if they are properly restrained, it reduces serious injury up to 82% of the time, and older kids... it's 45% of the time until it's time for an adult seat belt," Bourque said. During the event, certified technicians inspected each car seat for expiration dates and manufacturer recalls. The experts also verified that each seat was correctly installed and provided a proper fit for the child using it. Rome, President & CEO of the Rome Auto Group, said the dealership provided replacements for equipment that was no longer safe to use. "If they're expired or broken, we will give them a new one; Hyundai is part of Hyundai Hope, part of a social corporate responsibility to keep kids safe," Rome said. Families who attended the event were provided with snacks, and children had the opportunity to visit the Springfield Thunderbirds mascot, Boomer. After completing their safety inspections, attendees also received a pass for a free car wash. A total of 70 car seats that were not installed during the event will be donated to Baystate Children's Hospital. Bourque noted that the goal of the partnership is to provide families with safety education and supplies before an emergency occurs. "Baystate is there for families; we wanna be education and supply, come and see me on personal time, not emergencies. I don't want to see kids getting hurt," Bourque said.
