Requirements
  • Nursing school graduate.
  • Hold a current nursing license in the State of Alabama, renewed every two years.
  • Maintain current Basic Life Support/Healthcare Provider certification.
  • Demonstrate competency in advanced practical nursing skills and use of patient care and unit equipment.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of legal issues, patient rights, and regulatory and accrediting standards.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate patient care.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of growth and development principles across the life span.
Responsibilities
  • Provide and document individualized patient care, including patient evaluation, education, medication administration, intravenous therapy, treatments, and patient safety, as directed by the registered nurse or provider.
  • Communicate appropriate information regarding patient condition to the registered nurse and healthcare team.
  • Assist the registered nurse or provider during examinations and procedures.
  • Document patient data and education according to hospital and department guidelines.
  • Perform triage functions, including assessing patients and determining the next step in care in collaboration with the nursing team or providers.
  • Administer oral and injectable medications or immunizations within the licensed practical nurse scope and as directed by a provider.
  • Maintain a safe and caring environment for patients and families.
  • Keep informed about changes in hospital policy, procedures, and equipment.
  • Participate in nursing performance-improvement activities as assigned.
  • For perioperative anesthesia, apply aseptic technique and use specialized anesthesia equipment and supplies.
  • Provide anesthesia equipment and supplies based on identified needs in a timely, efficient, and safe manner.
  • Assist anesthesia personnel with administration of general, spinal, and regional anesthesia.
  • Set up invasive monitoring lines as requested by anesthesia personnel.
  • Run point-of-care laboratory tests and diagnostics under the direction of anesthesia personnel and complete required documentation.
  • Assist anesthesia staff during emergencies and trauma cases, including operating-room preparation, line placement, blood handling, laboratory draws, and patient positioning.
  • Troubleshoot and care for equipment used to deliver anesthesia care.
  • Receive, sort, decontaminate, and clean reusable anesthesia equipment.
  • Maintain adequate inventory levels of anesthesia supplies in departmental service areas.
  • Position patients according to operating-room policy and procedure and safely transport them postoperatively to the post-anesthesia care unit or another unit.
  • Report to duty on time, follow break and lunch policies, and complete assigned duties efficiently and timely.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized unit.
  • Use supplies efficiently.
