About the job

Requirements
  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Robotics, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of hands-on embedded firmware development on real products.
  • Strong embedded programming skills in C; C++ is a plus.
  • Experience with an RTOS such as FreeRTOS or Zephyr, and/or bare-metal firmware on microcontrollers.
  • Experience writing peripheral drivers and communication protocols, including I2C, UART, SPI, CAN, and Ethernet.
  • Experience with board bring-up and debugging using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and debug probes.
  • Ability to read schematics and datasheets.
  • Experience building low-latency, real-time systems.
Responsibilities
  • Design, write, and maintain real-time C/C++ firmware for microcontrollers such as STM32, ESP32, and NXP, on bare metal and an RTOS such as FreeRTOS or Zephyr.
  • Bring up new custom boards with the embedded hardware team, including peripherals, clocks, bootloaders, and board support packages.
  • Write and maintain peripheral drivers for GPIO, ADC, PWM, timers, DMA, I2C, SPI, UART, and CAN.
  • Write firmware for safety, sensor, and power subsystems, including watchdogs, fault handling, and safe states.
  • Write motor-control and actuator firmware, including BLDC, FOC, closed-loop speed, and force feedback, for robot tools.
  • Develop software interfaces for CAN, CANopen, and EtherCAT-based actuators and motor drives.
  • Write and maintain drivers for motor controllers, servo motors, and stepper motors.
  • Define deterministic communication protocols between microcontroller nodes and the main robot compute.
  • Integrate and configure SBCs such as Jetson Orin, Jetson Nano, and Raspberry Pi as embedded compute nodes in the robot platform.
  • Develop and maintain Linux kernel drivers for sensors and actuators, contribute to Linux modifications, and monitor CPU and resource usage.
  • Build monitoring and logging infrastructure for system health and fast debugging.
  • Support the over-the-air update pipeline for firmware and software.
  • Profile, debug, and minimize latency, jitter, and timing issues across firmware and communication interfaces.
  • Debug at the hardware/software boundary using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and JTAG/SWD debug probes.
  • Develop automated unit and hardware-in-the-loop tests for firmware.
  • Work with the software team to integrate the electromechanical system on ROS2 and contribute to ROS2 driver development.
  • Work with the embedded hardware and mechanical teams to support seamless integration and system-wide performance.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with CAN/CANopen/EtherCAT actuators and motor-control firmware, including BLDC and FOC.
  • Experience with Embedded Linux, Linux kernel drivers, and NVIDIA Jetson SBCs.
  • Experience with ROS or ROS2.
  • Experience with safety-related firmware, including watchdogs and safe states, and functional safety awareness.
  • Experience with robotic arms, AMR platforms, or mobile manipulators.
  • Experience reverse-engineering and integrating off-the-shelf embedded systems.

About the company

Origin builds a general-purpose construction robot that automates interior finishing trades such as drywall finishing and painting on real job sites. The AI-powered system can operate power tools and work alongside human crews across multiple trades. It is already deployed on live job sites in New York City with major contractor partners. Its goal is to enable scalable, high-quality, and cost-efficient construction by augmenting or replacing manual interior finishing work with intelligent robotics.

What believers are saying

  • March 2026 caps reached multiple global beverage brands, showing real customer validation.
  • February 2026 Matrix partnership extends 2026 qualification trials and product runs.
  • September 2025 Starlinger equipment financing supports PET sheet production through 2029 repayment.

What critics are saying

  • Origin approved dissolution on August 12, 2026, making employer durability existentially weak.
  • Management cut 59% of staff on May 1, 2026, and John Bissell stepped down.
  • Cash lasts only into Q3 2026 without financing, forcing asset sales or shutdown.

What makes Origin unique

  • Origin still owns PET cap technology with customer-requested designs and qualification data.
  • Matrix Bottling partnership broadens commercialization through U.S. bottling and capping services.
  • HP Embalagens distribution gives Origin access to Nestlé, Ferrero Rocher, and J&J networks.
