Requirements
  • You must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing and licensed as a registered nurse in the State of Georgia in good standing without limitations.
  • You must have a minimum of two years of full-time experience as a registered nurse post-orientation or post-residency training.
  • You must be certified in the American Heart Association’s Basic Cardiac Life Support.
  • Other required cardiopulmonary resuscitation certifications, such as Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation Program, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support, are unit specific.
  • You must meet any additional education, competencies, and certifications required by the specific clinical unit as a condition of employment.
  • You must meet other required registered nurse attributes specified by the clinical unit.
Responsibilities
  • Serve as a resource for patients and health care providers.
  • Assist with patient and staff education and support in all aspects of lactation management while working toward successful completion of the International Board Lactation Consultant examination.
  • Implement standards of care, policies, and procedures for breastfeeding management.
  • Assist in providing ongoing in-service education for neonatal, obstetric, and pediatric staff to enhance nursing staff development and facilitate successful lactation management.
  • Assist in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating teaching materials and methods for antepartum and postpartum breastfeeding teaching in one-on-one consultations or classes.
  • Provide telephone counseling to breastfeeding mothers in the community.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and families to establish and maintain a team approach that promotes successful lactation.
  • Evaluate, maintain, and assist with the use of appropriate breastfeeding aids and equipment.
  • Assist in designing and implementing individualized patient teaching care plans to promote consistent patient care in lactation management.
  • Keep the Lactation Coordinator informed of administrative and clinical matters pertinent to successful breastfeeding management and lactation consultant services.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill in basic breastfeeding techniques and management of uncomplicated breastfeeding problems.
  • Practice proper safety techniques in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures, and immediately report mechanical or electrical equipment malfunctions, unsafe conditions, or employee, patient, or visitor injury accidents to the Manager.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree is preferred.
  • National certification in a clinical specialty is preferred.
  • A minimum of one year of experience in lactation is preferred.
