About the job

Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, data science, machine learning, or a related discipline; experience is the most relevant factor.
  • At least 2 years of software engineering and site reliability engineering experience operating large-scale, distributed, cloud-native systems in production, with experience in some of Python, Go, Bash, Java, C#/.NET, SQL/NoSQL, Kubernetes, Terraform, ArgoCD, CI/CD, and observability stacks.
  • At least 1 year of site reliability or production engineering experience for large-scale systems, including defining and owning service-level indicators, service-level objectives, service-level agreements, error budgets, incident command and on-call; building and operating production observability using metrics, tracing, and logging tools such as OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, Dynatrace, Amazon CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, Google Cloud Operations, SolarWinds, or Splunk; maintaining environment integrity and preventing drift across pre-production and production; and applying segregation-of-duties controls such as least-privilege/role-based access control, deployment approvals, and secrets management in partnership with security and risk.
  • At least 1 year of cloud-native engineering and cloud platform ownership experience on a cloud hyperscaler such as Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud Platform, including AI/ML services such as Azure OpenAI, AWS Bedrock, or Vertex AI, as well as container orchestration, infrastructure as code, networking, and multi-environment management.
  • Prior experience operating AI/ML and agentic workloads in production, including reliability failure modes such as drift, train/serve skew, and output variance; MLOps/LLMOps; and the AI control plane, including model/LLM gateways and guardrails, from operability and performance perspectives.
  • Prior experience with load and performance testing under simulated production traffic using tools such as LoadRunner, k6, or JMeter; chaos engineering using tools such as Azure Chaos Studio or AWS Fault Injector; capacity planning; autoscaling; and cloud/AI cost engineering using FinOps tooling or dashboards, including GPU/inference and token cost attribution.
  • Prior software engineering experience and understanding of Business Context Diagrams, sequence/activity/state/entity relationship/data flow diagrams, object-oriented programming and design, data structures, algorithms, code instrumentation, and AI-augmented spec-driven development.
  • Prior experience using methodologies and tools such as XP, Lean, DevSecOps, SRE, ADO, GitHub, SonarQube, MLflow, and agentic AI frameworks such as LangFuse, LangSmith, or equivalent multi-agent orchestration tools to operate high-quality, resilient platforms and products at scale.
  • Ability to travel an average of 10%, based on the work performed and products built.
  • Limited immigration sponsorship may be available.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, including the ability to handle diverse situations, complex projects, and changing priorities.
Responsibilities
  • Operate products, platforms, and environments to meet service-level objectives within budget; track incident trends and toil to prioritize reliability improvements and maintain safe, resilient, cost-effective operations.
  • Advocate for production reliability and operability, ensuring systems are admissible, performant, safe to run, and able to degrade gracefully during failures.
  • Participate in designing observability, performance and resilience testing, and operational tooling; support production admission by gating releases on error budgets and automated reliability checks; own readiness verification, environment integrity, and subsequent operational support.
  • Maintain the operational integrity of production and pre-production environments and the standards against which systems are admitted.
  • Own service-level objectives and error budgets; build and operate production observability, including codified, version-controlled dashboards and actionable SLO-driven alerting, and feed operational insights back into engineering.
  • Run performance, ambient-noise, and chaos testing to verify readiness, and guard environments against drift.
  • Create technical specifications, runbooks, and shared playbooks; lead blameless postmortems that turn incidents into learning and systemic fixes; and write supportable automation to meet or exceed availability, performance, and cost reliability key performance indicators.
  • Develop lean operational solutions through rapid, inexpensive experimentation, engaging engineering teams before, during, and after delivery to co-define service-level objectives and operational readiness safeguards without becoming a delivery bottleneck.
  • Harden reliability through incremental, measurable improvements, progressive resilience testing, and service-level objective refinement while keeping operations supportable and maintainable.
  • Collaborate with engineering, platform engineering, security and risk, data governance, engineering leadership, and architecture; integrate constraints, uphold production standards, co-define service-level objectives, verify readiness, support production admission decisions, and enforce segregation-of-duties controls in partnership with security and risk.
  • Operate AI and agentic workloads reliably through cloud platform ownership, observability, performance and capacity engineering, chaos engineering, cloud/AI cost engineering, and AI and agentic secure software development lifecycle practices, with automation and quality checks throughout the lifecycle.
  • Acquire product and platform domain knowledge, translate reliability needs, reference architectures, and operational requirements into service-level objectives, runbooks, and production tooling, and address AI-specific failure modes such as drift, train/serve skew, latency, output variance, and token/GPU cost anomalies.
  • Articulate technical concepts, trade-offs, and evidence clearly; influence teammates and product teams and align technical solutions with business objectives.
  • Engage and collaborate with product engineering teams at all organizational levels and with customers as needed; build constructive relationships, align perspectives, and drive consensus on feasible solutions.

About the company

Deloitte audits companies and advises businesses and governments on tax, technology, and risk, and it is one of the Big Four, the world's four largest accounting firms. In 1849 its founder became the first independent auditor of a public company, Britain's Great Western Railway. Its auditors check companies' financial reports for errors and fraud before investors rely on them, while its consultants design strategy, install business software, and defend clients against cyberattacks. Clients pay fees for each audit or project, and each country's Deloitte firm is a separate business owned by its local partners. Deloitte was founded in London in 1845 and is based in New York.

What critics are saying

  • Tech consulting is lagging: it grew 2.5% in the year to May 2026, the slowest of Deloitte's four businesses.
  • Back-office benefits are shrinking: Deloitte US will halve parental leave to 8 weeks for internal staff in January 2027.
  • Federal work brings scrutiny: Deloitte agreed to pay $21.5 million in August 2026 over claims diversity targets swayed promotions.

What makes Deloitte unique

  • Deloitte is the biggest Big Four accounting firm: fiscal 2025 revenue of $70.5 billion beat PwC's $56.9 billion.
  • Consulting runs deeper here: Deloitte kept its consultants in 2003 after PwC, EY, and KPMG sold or spun off theirs.

AI forces companies to rethink hiring practices as job applications surge and entry-level pipelines shrink

Business Insider convened 15 HR and C-suite leaders in Davos to discuss how AI is reshaping hiring and talent pipelines. The roundtable, presented by Indeed, revealed growing concerns about entry-level positions and skills assessment. Deloitte's Elizabeth Faber emphasised maintaining a "human-led, technology-powered" approach whilst carefully navigating reduced junior hiring. TCW's Melissa Stolfi noted her firm has downsized its analyst class but maintains a pyramid structure to preserve apprenticeship culture and future leadership pipelines. Indeed's chief economist Svenja Gudell warned that whilst tech employers now demand five-plus years' experience, this creates future talent shortages if junior hiring continues declining. Salesforce's Nathalie Scardino said her company receives two million applications annually and has shifted focus from years of experience to learning aptitude. Manpower Group's Becky Frankiewicz noted AI can process candidates faster whilst reducing bias, potentially unlocking opportunities beyond traditional qualifications.
