Moment Energy repurposes retired electric vehicle (EV) batteries into energy storage systems. It refurbishes used batteries and assembles them into modular storage solutions, which can be deployed to supply high-speed, sustainable charging and grid storage. The company is distinguished by being the first in North America to obtain UL 1974 certification, validating the safety and efficiency of repurposed batteries, and by real-world deployments such as a battery energy-storage system at YVR airport. Unlike vendors that rely on new cells, Moment Energy focuses on repurposing existing batteries to offer an affordable, lower-emission alternative for energy storage, while delivering reliable discharge capabilities. The goal is to expand access to sustainable energy storage, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and support clean energy adoption by providing cost-effective, certified battery storage solutions.

What believers are saying

  • Surging electricity demand from AI, data centers, and electrification expands storage markets.
  • Megafactory 1 targets 1 GWh annual output by 2030, enabling scale.
  • Working-capital financing bridges deployment gaps for incentive-reimbursed storage projects.

What critics are saying

  • Chinese BESS vendors compress margins with cheaper, higher-performing new-cell systems.
  • Second-life battery fire incidents would freeze adoption among critical infrastructure buyers.
  • Automakers may divert retired packs to recyclers or captive reuse programs.

What makes Moment Energy unique

  • First commercial-scale North American second-life EV battery storage builder.
  • UL safety stack certification strengthens buyer trust and procurement access.
  • Supplies from North American automakers and Mercedes-Benz Energy partnerships.

World's largest EV battery repurposing facility opens in Surrey.

World's largest EV battery repurposing facility opens in Surrey. Published 9:30 am Wednesday, June 24, 2026 Moment Energy now operates what the company calls the world's largest EV battery repurposing facility at a Bridgeview industrial building. The new facility, dubbed Megafactory 1, transforms retired EV batteries into "cost-effective, rapidly deployable energy storage systems that support critical infrastructure, including data centres, hospitals, factories and microgrids," the company boasts. At 12850 112B Ave., a ribbon-cutting event Tuesday (June 23) celebrated work to bring domestic battery energy storage manufacturing capacity online six weeks after the project was announced. Investors, government and industry reps gathered at the Surrey factory, expected to produce 1 GWh of battery energy storage systems by 2030, creating more than 100 direct jobs and supporting more than 1,000 indirect jobs across B.C., according to Moment Energy. As demand for electricity continues to surge, driven by AI, data centres, electrification and grid modernization, millions of EV batteries on North American roads are expected to be retired in coming years. "Moment Energy addresses both challenges by turning retired batteries into highly scalable energy storage systems that offer an immediate solution to energy shortages," a company news release trumpets. Said to be the first and only company building commercial-scale battery energy storage from second-life EV batteries, Moment Energy was founded in Vancouver in 2020. "We announced this project six weeks ago. Today it's operational," said Edward Chiang, company co-founder and CEO. "Demand for energy storage is accelerating, and so is the supply of retired EV batteries. We show that the right technology can enable North America to re-onshore domestic manufacturing in weeks, not decades, creating thousands of jobs and economic prosperity." The opening follows Moment Energy's recent US$40 million Series B financing round, bringing total funding to more than US$100 million and marking the next phase of the company's expansion. On June 24, NorthX Climate Tech (NorthX) announced a $3-million investment in Moment Energy, a third investment in the company, totalling nearly $4.5 million since 2022. "Moment Energy was one of NorthX's first investments," said Sarah Goodman, NorthX president and CEO. "Today, four founders who started in half a garage in Surrey are opening a megafactory with a team of over 80 people, creating great careers, giving batteries a second life, and proving that with the right support, climate technology can be built and scaled from British Columbia." An investment of $4.9 million was made by Pacific Economic Development Canada (PacifiCan) via the federal Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure.

1GWh! World's largest retired battery reuse plant lands in canada.

1GWh! World's largest retired battery reuse plant lands in canada. PVTIME - Canadian clean technology firm Moment Energy has announced plans to build a large-scale facility for the reuse of retired EV batteries in Vancouver, British Columbia. Due to start operating in June 2026, the plant will convert retired EV batteries into energy storage systems, with an expected annual capacity of 1GWh by 2030. Upon completion, it will become the world's largest certified, non-FEOC-compliant second-life battery facility. Picture: Moment Energy Moment Energy has stated that the plant will address the growing shortage of energy storage for utilities, industrial users, and data centres, while supporting North America's domestic energy supply network. As a fully vertically integrated facility, it will oversee every stage of the process, from battery receipt and testing to integration and deployment. By repurposing retired EV batteries into BESS, the company will offer a cheaper and faster alternative to deploying new batteries. Moment Energy's management team believes that second-life battery systems provide a scalable solution to short-term storage gaps, with hundreds of GWh of batteries set to be retired over the next decade. Backed by the Amazon Climate Pledge Fund, Voyager Ventures, In-Q-Tel and Evok Innovations, the plant will be operated in accordance with UL 1974 certification standards and will maintain a fully local North American battery supply chain in order to reduce reliance on imports. The plant is expected to create over 100 technical jobs, with on-site construction set to finish within six weeks. This announcement follows the recent completion of a $40 million Series B funding round led by Evok Innovations, which has pushed Moment Energy's total funding above $100 million. Co-founder and CEO Edward Chiang stated that establishing the facility in the company's Canadian home base will meet next-generation energy needs and drive domestic manufacturing growth.
