Requirements
  • A LOMA 280, LOMA 290, LOMA 311, LOMA 320, ACS-100, ALU-1, ALU-2, FALU, or CLU designation, or commensurate experience as outlined in the selection criteria, is required.
  • Demonstrated experience evaluating risk and insurability on large face amount cases is required.
  • Proven experience working in a customer-oriented field and articulating information to clients patiently and clearly while managing multiple client-related tasks and issues is required.
  • Proven examples of assisting team members beyond normal duties are required.
  • Proven experience adapting to and demonstrating flexibility with changes to policies and procedures is required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology is required.
  • Proven financial and medical underwriting skills are required.
  • Demonstrated negotiation skills and experience presenting adverse decisions to producers clearly, concisely, and positively are required.
  • Proven analytical skills, including identifying and quantifying problems and providing effective resolutions, are required.

Responsibilities
  • Independently determine the extent of risk to the company and assign a classification.
  • Independently evaluate underwriting requirements through correspondence, reports, and forms.
  • Determine whether additional underwriting requirements beyond regular age-and-amount requirements are needed.
  • Make underwriting decisions that produce claim results within the company’s mortality expectations.
  • Determine the appropriateness of applied coverage, including sufficient financial justification and appropriate insurable interest.
  • Concur on cases exceeding the Underwriters’ limits of authority.
  • Complete file reviews on Underwriters’ work.
  • Comply with federal and state rules and regulations, including the Medical Information Bureau, Fair Credit Reporting Act, blood testing, replacements, and 1035 exchanges.
  • Communicate with field force, vendors, reinsurers, and Home Office associates.
  • Underwrite policy changes, reinstatements, rate reductions, and rate removals.
  • Give direction to New Business support staff and Underwriters.
  • Serve periodically as the team’s lead, communicating workflow to the group and other teams.
  • Work within a team of associates with varied experience, expertise, and job levels.
  • Prepare procedures for work-related procedural and training manuals and prepare formal reports for department projects.
  • Mentor underwriters on cases, customer service, agent relationships, and technical skills.
  • Develop and present structured job-specific training under management direction using adult-learning principles.
  • Share prepared case studies with underwriting staff to develop group skills.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive medical, financial, personal, and payroll information.
  • Present underwriting practices at sales schools and seminars.
  • Build relationships with industry peers to share best practices and benchmark underwriting guidelines.
  • Collaborate with the AVP and Chief Underwriter, Chief Underwriter, and Medical Director on special projects.
  • Act as backup to the AVP and Chief Underwriter or Chief Underwriter as needed.
  • Perform other assigned duties and comply with company policies and standards.
