About the job

Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Architecture or Engineering, including Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 15 years of experience in data center or mission-critical design and delivery, including senior leadership of multidisciplinary design programs for hyperscale or artificial-intelligence-focused facilities.
  • A proven track record leading design across the full delivery lifecycle from concept through issued-for-construction documentation and commissioning, with accountability for schedule, cost, and quality.
  • Demonstrated leadership of principal or expert individual contributors and external design and construction partners, including CSA, MEP, design-assist, and general contractor/construction manager partners.
  • Experience defining, negotiating, and managing design contracts, including scope, deliverables, standard of care, fees, and change control, and administering owner-side design oversight through construction with general contractors and subcontractors, including RFIs, submittals, change orders, and field changes.
  • Strong command of the integration of architectural, electrical, mechanical, controls, and network scopes, as well as delivery models including design-bid-build, design-assist, and EPC.
  • Strong judgment regarding constructability, value engineering, and design risk, with commercial and schedule discipline.
  • Ability to represent design internally to the CTO, leadership, and board, and to lead external partners.
Responsibilities
  • Own end-to-end design delivery across the portfolio from concept through schematic design, design development, issued-for-permit/issued-for-construction documentation, and construction-phase support against committed schedule milestones and yield-on-cost targets.
  • Hold the integrated, multidisciplinary design schedule and budget, and drive the critical path across architectural, electrical, mechanical, controls, and network scopes.
  • Govern design change control, trade studies, and value-engineering decisions while protecting design intent, five-nines availability, and operability.
  • Own the design basis of design and its consistent application across projects, along with design deliverables supporting permitting, procurement, and construction.
  • Directly lead and develop the five Principal individual contributors covering Architect/Master Planning, Electrical, Mechanical, Controls, and Network; set objectives, review performance, and build discipline centers of excellence.
  • Integrate discipline reference architectures into one coordinated facility design and arbitrate cross-discipline trade-offs.
  • Ensure the Controls–Network interlock on customer data exposure is delivered jointly and coherently in accordance with the single-tenant model and CTO-captured requirements.
  • Enforce portfolio-wide design standards, playbooks, and prototypical modules for rapid, repeatable deployment.
  • Define, review, negotiate, and manage design contracts with design partners, owning scopes of work, deliverable schedules, standard of care, fee structures, and design responsibility matrices.
  • Establish consistent contracting standards and templates for design engagements, and align scope boundaries and interface agreements to avoid gaps or overlaps.
  • Manage contract performance through delivery by tracking deliverables against milestones, administering change and additional-services requests, reviewing and approving design invoices against progress, and resolving scope and performance issues.
  • Partner with Legal, Finance, and Procurement on design-contract terms, risk allocation, and commercial approvals, engaging qualified counsel on high-stakes terms.
  • Serve as Montera's senior owner-side leader to external design and construction partners, including CSA and MEP engineers of record, design-assist trade partners, general contractor/construction manager, and specialty consultants.
  • Own the design-assist and delivery-model strategy and associated partner scopes, deliverables, and interface agreements.
  • Lead design reviews, coordination summits, and constructability reviews, and drive partner accountability for quality, schedule, and cost.
  • Support authority-having-jurisdiction permitting and entitlement outcomes through the Architect/Master Planning Principal and partner teams.
  • Own owner-side design oversight through construction with general contractors and subcontractors, protecting design intent from issued-for-construction documentation through commissioning and turnover.
  • Govern the construction-phase design workflow, including RFIs, submittals, shop-drawing review, and coordination/BIM clash resolution across trades, while driving timely engineer-of-record responses.
  • Review and disposition field changes, design-related change orders, and value-engineering proposals from general contractors and subcontractors while safeguarding reliability, operability, and standards conformance.
  • Lead design representation at OAC meetings and site design reviews, track design-related construction risk, and drive resolution with the general contractor, subcontractors, and design partners.
  • Ensure complete as-built and design close-out documentation from general contractors and subcontractors and feed it back into reference designs and standards.
  • Ensure designs are constructable, coordinated and clash-free, and aligned with procurement lead times and site logistics.
  • Own design-side inputs to commissioning and integrated systems testing, ensuring acceptance criteria and turnover readiness are designed in.
  • Drive lessons learned from construction and operations back into reference designs and standards for continuous fleet improvement.
  • Translate CTO-captured customer requirements into a governed design program and report design status, risks, and decisions to the CTO and leadership.
  • Partner with Development, Delivery, Operations, GRC, and Finance on schedule, cost, constructability, and interconnection-driven design constraints, including FRT and utility obligations.
  • Provide design content and technical substantiation for the CTO's customer engagements and executive or board materials without owning the customer-facing relationship.
Desired Qualifications
  • Professional licensure as a Professional Engineer or Registered Architect.
