- A high school diploma or GED is required.
- Current registration with the Maryland State Board of Examiners of Nurses as a Certified Nursing Assistant is required.
- A valid driver's license and an insured, properly maintained automobile are required.
- Previous experience in an acute care or home care setting is required.
- Knowledge and understanding of hospice philosophy are required.
- Skill in oral and written communication is required.
- Skill in managing issues related to death and dying is required.
- The ability to work independently is required.
- The ability to communicate effectively with facility staff when assigned to facility-based care is required.
- Skill with hand-held communication devices and electronic documentation is required.
- The ability to demonstrate empathy for ill, injured, frail, and impaired patients is required.
- Perform personal care, including assisting with bedpans and urinals, bathing, back rubs, oral hygiene, shampoos, changing bed linen, dressing and undressing, and feeding patients.
- Meet patient safety needs and use equipment safely and properly, including foot stools, side rails, and oxygen equipment.
- Plan and prepare nutritious meals, including shopping, as assigned.
- Take and record oral, rectal, and axillary temperatures, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure when ordered and within the aide's training limitations.
- Provide proper skin care and observe patients' skin to prevent tissue breakdown over bony prominences.
- Report patients' conditions and significant changes to the assigned supervising nurse, including caregiver and interpersonal issues.
- Assist with ambulation and exercise as instructed by the primary care nurse or therapist.
- Provide assigned light laundry assistance and keep the patient's living area clean and orderly.
- Perform range-of-motion exercises and other simple procedures as extended therapy services when ordered and within the aide's training limitations.
- Provide respite for the patient, family, or caregiver when on-site, as appropriate.
