Zoetis shares plunge 50% as animal health giant trails S&P 500 despite $2.5B revenue

Zoetis Inc. (ZTS), the world's leading animal health company, has significantly underperformed the S&P 500. The stock has plunged 39.5% year-to-date and 50.2% over the past year, whilst the S&P 500 gained 12% and 19.5% respectively during the same periods. The Parsippany, New Jersey-based company, which develops vaccines and medicines for companion animals and livestock, currently trades 50.9% below its 52-week high of $155.15. The underperformance stems from sluggish 2.7% annual revenue growth over two years and projected sales declines. Despite market challenges, Zoetis reported Q2 adjusted earnings per share of $1.87, beating Wall Street's $1.86 estimate, though revenue of $2.50 billion missed the $2.51 billion forecast. The company maintains a market capitalisation of $31.9 billion.

Zoetis drops 40% in 2025 as Michael Burry bets on beaten-down animal health stock

Zoetis, an animal health company, has drawn attention from investor Michael Burry, who is long the stock according to Substack disclosures cited by media outlets. The shares have fallen roughly 40% this year and over 70% from their 2021 peak. Competition from Elanco and Merck in dermatology and parasite treatments has pressured results. In fiscal Q2 2026, revenue was roughly flat, with US sales down 7% whilst international revenue grew 6%. The stock now trades near 12 times forward earnings, compared with a historical average of 30 times. Zoetis maintains around 86% of the US pet skin drug market, with gross margins above 70%. Wall Street analysts remain mostly bullish, with consensus price targets suggesting roughly 70% upside potential.

Zoetis misses Q2 revenue target, slashes full-year guidance by 6.1% amid vet visit decline

Zoetis reported flat revenue of $2.47 billion in Q2, missing Wall Street estimates of $2.50 billion, though adjusted earnings per share of $1.87 slightly beat consensus. The animal health company faces intensifying competition in key Companion Animal categories and declining US veterinary clinic visits. CEO Kristin Peck noted that veterinary visits have declined across markets for multiple years, coinciding with price increases exceeding broader consumer inflation. The company's Livestock and Diagnostics segments showed resilience despite weakness in dermatology and parasiticides. Zoetis lowered its full-year revenue guidance to $9.22 billion from $9.82 billion, a 6.1% reduction, and cut adjusted EPS guidance to $6.20, down 10.5%. Operating margin fell to 37.4% from 39.1% year-on-year. Management indicated it is implementing temporary, targeted promotional actions rather than permanent price cuts to defend market share. Competitive pressures may persist into 2027.

Zoetis Q2 earnings beat at $1.87 per share, revenues flat at $2.47B, 2026 outlook cut

Zoetis reported second-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings of $1.87 per share, beating the consensus estimate of $1.84. However, total revenues of $2.47 billion fell flat year over year and marginally missed expectations of $2.49 billion. US segment revenues declined 7% to $1.30 billion, driven by an 11% drop in companion animal product sales due to softer demand and increased competition. Livestock product sales in the US rose 23% to $222 million. International segment revenues increased 8% to $1.17 billion, supported by growth in parasiticides and livestock products. Zoetis cut its 2026 revenue guidance to $9.12-9.32 billion, reflecting expected operational growth of negative 1-3%. Year to date, shares have plunged 40%.
