Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in engineering or science, including a related field such as Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Engineering Science, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Acoustics, or Computer Science.
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience for the Intermediate Professional level; no prior relevant work experience is required for the Professional level.
  • Ability to understand complex or ill-defined systems, develop action plans to resolve questions, and deliver concrete findings and guidance to stakeholders and customers.
  • Ability to absorb a broad range of information and apply creativity in problem solving.
  • Strong written, oral, interpersonal communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently in environments where problems are not initially well-defined.
  • Eligibility to obtain a government security clearance, successful completion of required background checks, participation in the ARL drug testing program, and compliance with applicable electronic and physical monitoring requirements.
  • U.S. citizenship is required to apply.
Responsibilities
  • Design, set up, and execute transient, physics-based computer simulation studies to investigate metrics associated with undersea engagements.
  • Perform modeling, simulation, and analysis of undersea systems for Department of Defense applications.
  • Analyze simulation study results and condense them into cohesive conclusions and actionable recommendations.
  • Perform system-level operability and Concept of Operations-based studies and analyze the results.
  • Analyze, design, and implement computational models for vehicle dynamics, sound propagation, signal processing, and related undersea systems applications.
  • Integrate and analyze vehicle software, including guidance and control, signal processing, and vehicle controller software, into larger digital simulations.
  • Utilize physics-based modeling and simulation software and software-in-the-loop simulations; the position does not involve hardware or hardware-in-the-loop.
  • For the higher-level position, work with more complex scenarios, perform more in-depth analyses, and manage more concurrent tasking.
  • Work onsite in State College, Pennsylvania and travel periodically as required.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience modeling vehicle dynamics, signal processing, sound propagation, undersea acoustics, reverberation, sonar arrays, numerical analysis and methods, statistics, autonomy algorithms, or computational physics.
  • Programming experience for engineering and scientific applications using FORTRAN, C, C++, Ada, MATLAB, Python, or Simulink.
  • Willingness to work concurrently on multiple projects, usually two to three.
  • Ability to work closely with a small cadre of highly trained professionals to meet design and program objectives.
  • Current eligibility for access to classified information at the Secret level or higher and willingness to undergo a government background investigation to upgrade clearance eligibility if required.
