  • Ability to perform lighting-level calculations; size wire, conduit, and overcurrent protection for lighting and power; perform voltage-drop calculations; route conduit and cable tray; calculate tray and conduit fill; and determine motor control center and load center unit substation loading.
  • Familiarity with specifications and installation details for construction bulk materials and equipment, and ability to create electrical installation documents from vendor equipment drawings.
  • Ability to develop equipment specifications for motor control centers, variable frequency drives, induction and synchronous motors, load center unit substations, 15kV/5kV switchgear and load break switches, and to calculate short-circuit and overcurrent protective-device ratings.
  • Knowledge of schedule constraints and information requirements for producing electrical deliverables.
  • Ability to produce a 15kV power-system single-line diagram and familiarity with 15kV power-system equipment and above- and below-ground installation techniques.
  • Ability to develop electrical installation specifications, accurately estimate task completion, develop construction cost estimates, detailed engineering schedules and man-hour budgets, and determine construction material quantities.
  • Ability to contribute to P&IDs for measurement and control; develop control narratives; specify process instrumentation and installation details; size control valves using appropriate software; and develop specifications and data sheets for instrumentation, analyzers, control systems, and actuated valves.
  • Knowledge of standards applicable to instrumentation and controls (ISA).

  • Provide on-site assistance during startup.
  • Provide technical guidance to less experienced drafting and engineering personnel and coordinate work with staff and the discipline lead.
  • Perform discipline-lead duties on small- to mid-sized projects.
  • Produce estimate-level designs and material take-offs appropriate to the estimate level, including preliminary designs and material take-offs.
  • Produce detailed design calculations and construction-material sketches, organized for checking, drawing preparation, and delivery when required.
  • Produce 15kV/5kV equipment specifications and electrical installation specifications.
  • Develop conceptual layouts and cost studies to identify efficient solutions to engineering tasks.
  • Produce installation details, motor control center single-line diagrams, electric-room layouts, motor-control elementaries, connection diagrams, cable schedules, control-panel layouts, and grounding, lighting, power, and instrumentation plans under general supervision.
  • Develop designs that use construction materials efficiently, are easy to construct, and meet client expectations.
  • Check other engineers’ calculations for accuracy and conformance to codes, specifications, design criteria, and good engineering practice.
  • Assist the drafting group in resolving routine layout and detailing problems by providing sketches and details needed to complete engineering drawings.
  • Consult with design leaders from other disciplines to coordinate information needed for scheduled project completion.
  • Advise the senior engineer of identified design or scope changes.
  • Help assemble scopes, drawings, and specifications into packages for electrical/instrumentation purchase inquiries and subcontract pricing.
