Novelis produces first coil in Bay Minette, Alabama. Novelis says all assets at Bay Minette needed to begin commercial shipments are being commissioned. Published October 08, 2026 Aluminum recycling and rolling company Novelis Inc. has produced the first coil on the cold mill at its $5 billion aluminum recycling and rolling plant in Bay Minette, Alabama. Novelis announced its intention to build a greenfield aluminum recycling and rolling mill in Bay Minette in mid-2022. At that time, the company said the project would cost $2.5 billion and would produce 600,000 metric tons of low-carbon finished aluminum goods annually. "Producing the first coil on the cold mill is an important step in commissioning Bay Minette and increasing the supply of rolled aluminum in the United States," says Novelis President and CEO Steve Fisher. "With the North American market being capacity constrained, this investment will help Novelis meet long-term market demand, strengthen our U.S. manufacturing footprint and increase the use of recycled content in our products." When fully operational, the Bay Minette facility's products will serve the beverage packaging, automotive and specialty product markets. The plant also includes a recycling center that will be able to process more than 15 billion used beverage cans annually. According to the company, all assets at Bay Minette that it needs to start commercial shipments are in the commissioning process. Novelis is working toward customer qualification and commercial shipments, which are on track to begin in the second quarter of 2027.

Tariffs cost 80 workers their jobs at Kingston aluminum plant.

Tariffs cost 80 workers their jobs at Kingston aluminum plant. Novelis has cut roughly one-third of its Kingston workforce as the company struggles with a 50 per cent U.S. tariff on Canadian aluminum. An aluminum manufacturer in Kingston, Ont., has laid off 80 workers after U.S. tariffs made shipping Canadian metal south of the border more expensive. Novelis confirmed the job cuts Friday, saying it was reducing production and staffing at its Kingston facility because of the cost of American Section 232 duties on Canadian aluminum. The layoffs affect roughly one-third of the plant's workforce. Ten salaried employees were terminated, while approximately 70 hourly workers were temporarily laid off. "Continuing to operate the plant at reduced volumes provides Novelis with the option to increase production if the situation meaningfully changes," the company said. Temporarily laid-off employees could be recalled if production increases. Novelis said it would work with the union on any recalls and is providing severance and employment-transition assistance to affected workers. The latest cuts come just over a year after Novelis laid off 21 Kingston employees because of U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum. U.S. President Donald Trump initially raised duties on imported steel and aluminum to 25 per cent before doubling the rate to 50 per cent in June 2025. Although Washington revised parts of its tariff policy in 2026, the 50 per cent levy on Canadian metal remained. Canada is the largest foreign supplier of aluminum to the United States, leaving Canadian smelters and manufacturers particularly exposed to changes in American trade policy. Industry leaders have repeatedly warned that the tariffs would reduce Canadian production, disrupt integrated North American supply chains and trigger further job losses. The Kingston layoffs add to the mounting economic damage from the trade dispute, which has already affected steel, aluminum and automotive operations across Ontario.
