About the company

Savannah River Mission Completion

View

SRMC is a prime U.S. Department of Energy contractor that manages the treatment and disposal of radioactive liquid waste at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina. Its work brings together BWX Technologies, Amentum, and Fluor under the Integrated Mission Completion Contract to run all liquid-waste facilities in one program. The process separates high-level waste, which is vitrified at the Defense Waste Processing Facility, from a large volume of salt waste that is solidified and disposed of in Saltstone Disposal Units. Its goal is to complete tank closures by 2037, using methods such as the Next Generation Solvent, drones, and artificial intelligence to map sites and optimize cleanup.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • SRMC achieved eight preliminary cease waste removals in under two years by May 2026.
  • August 2026 plan cut 300 canisters, improving DWPF efficiency and extending disposal capacity.
  • September 2026 construction started on the final mega-size disposal unit, de-risking the mission timeline.

What critics are saying

  • DOE depends on one contractor; any performance failure threatens 2037 tank-closure credibility.
  • SDU 12 remains under construction; delayed disposal capacity can bottleneck SWPF throughput in 2027.
  • A serious worker injury or radiological event could trigger DOE enforcement, shutdowns, and rebid pressure.

What makes Savannah River Mission Completion unique

  • SRMC uniquely combines SWPF, DWPF, tank farms, and Saltstone under one DOE contract.
  • BWX, Amentum, and Fluor bring nuclear operations, remediation, and federal-project execution depth.
  • Drones and AI now support tank mapping, sampling, and closure acceleration at SRS.
