About the job
- An associate’s degree is required.
- Completion of a NAACLS histology training program is required.
- HT ASCP certification or completion of a Histology Technician training course, with eligibility to sit for the exam, is required; certification must be obtained within one year of hire.
- For CLIA requirements to perform specified job duties, a minimum of 60 semester hours is preferred, including 24 hours in medical laboratory technology, or 24 hours comprising 6 hours of chemistry, 6 hours of biology, and 12 hours in chemistry, biology, or medical technology in any combination, plus three months of documented laboratory training in high-complexity testing by specialty.
- Knowledge of standard concepts, practices, and procedures, with a strong understanding of anatomy and tissue pathology, is required.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required, along with the ability to learn new software quickly.
- Ability to communicate in an active multi-office environment, efficiently operate job-related office equipment, communicate by telephone, and sit or stand for large portions of the workday is required.
- Perform complex histology procedures using a variety of techniques.
- Accession tissue specimens.
- Receive and prepare tissue specimens.
- Perform grossing and inking when Agency requirements are met.
- Prepare media, chemicals, reagents, and solutions.
- Process tissue, embedding, microtomy or cutting, staining, cryostat use, and freezing.
- Label and prepare slides.
- Perform quality control on completed slides.
- With oversight, identify problems that may affect diagnosis and results.
- Examine slides under a microscope to detect deviations from the norm and report abnormalities.
- Preserve and store samples.
- Clean and maintain instruments, equipment, and work areas.
- Log, file, track, and store specimens and slides.
- Maintain laboratory supplies inventory.
- Maintain documentation in all CLIA-required and clinic- or laboratory-preferred quality assurance and quality control logs.
- Adhere to compliance requirements and complete compliance training.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- At least 2 years of experience as a histology technician is preferred.
- Detail orientation, effective communication and interpersonal skills for collaborating with diverse teams, and the ability to work effectively and cooperatively with staff, leadership, and the public are desired.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment is desired.
- High integrity, ethical judgment, and confidentiality when handling sensitive data are desired.
- Ability to use time productively and contribute to company operational efficiency and effectiveness is desired.
