Requirements
- Graduation from a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing is required for nurse practitioners.
- National certification by one of the recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Certification Centers is required for nurse practitioners.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia is required for nurse practitioners.
- Basic Life Support certification is required, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department’s discretion.
- A Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree as a Physician Assistant is required for physician assistants.
- Graduation from an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant-approved Physician Assistant training program is required.
- Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants is required.
- Licensure or eligibility for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine is required for physician assistants.
- The role requires clinical and medical skills and expertise in caring for pain management patients.
- The role requires the ability to perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures within established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- The role requires critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills in clinical decision-making.
- The role requires the ability to safely use patient-care equipment.

Responsibilities
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for patients and families during inpatient hospitalization and immediate post-discharge ambulatory care.
- Complete daily rounds, consultations, and pre-procedure evaluations.
- Complete integrated patient assessments.
- Order additional tests or consultations in collaboration with pain management faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff about abnormal patient evaluation findings.
- Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
- Facilitate patient discharge, post-procedure management, and follow-up by coordinating appropriate services and tests.
- Perform necessary procedures according to established clinical guidelines, protocols, and scope of practice.
- Develop individualized pain management plans of care, including teaching, discharge planning, and referrals to other healthcare team members.
- Participate in physician rounds and consultations as applicable.
- Identify unstable or complex pain management situations and facilitate appropriate interventions.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate pain management patients and coordinate follow-up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting.
- Assist with collecting outcome measures.
- Provide education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using appropriate teaching strategies.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of patient and family teaching and collaborate with nursing and clinical staff on education plans.
- Maintain current knowledge and complete identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for pain management patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in the area of expertise.
- Mentor nursing personnel at all levels of clinical practice.
- Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate to the area of expertise.
- Communicate with patients, families, physicians, and ancillary services to ensure coordinated and efficient patient care.
- Document plans of care, interventions, and evaluations for every patient visit in the medical record.
- Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient-outcome improvements in care.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in pain management practice that improve patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to solve problems and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education.
- Promote innovation in the expanded role of care delivery to pain management patients and families in inpatient and ambulatory settings.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
- Participate in the University Health Associates Performance Improvement Plan.
- Apply performance-improvement findings to change practice and improve patient care.
- Review and interpret pain management data, including patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
- Assist faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
- Complete other assigned duties and projects.
Desired Qualifications
- Acute care or pain management experience is preferred for nurse practitioners.
- Acute care or pain management experience is preferred for physician assistants.
- Eligible new graduates will be considered.
- A Master’s-level degree as a Physician Assistant is preferred.
