Requirements
  • A Master's Degree in Counselling, Counselling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, or a relevant mental health field is required.
  • An active license with the Australian Counselling Association, Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia, or Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency is required.
  • One to three years of experience on helplines, paid or volunteer, preferably in mental health or crisis settings, is required.
  • Fluent communication skills in the applicant's native language are required.
  • Experience managing high-risk situations, including suicide risk or acute crisis, is required.
  • Resilience and emotional composure under pressure, including the ability to recover from stressful interactions and high-risk cases, are required.
  • Experience in clinical assessment, psychological report writing, and risk documentation is required.
Responsibilities
  • Respond to a telephone hotline supporting people bereaved through suicide, engaging in self-harm, experiencing suicidal ideation, or concerned about friends or family members.
  • Conduct telephone risk assessments and high-risk assessments, including lethality assessments for suicide cases and individuals identified as at risk.
  • Provide evidence-based professional crisis counseling and personal support using de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques.
  • Assess callers' needs and triage them for immediate safety or emergency medical attention, or refer them to appropriate services such as face-to-face crisis intervention, case management and advocacy services, individual therapy, or group services.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed call reports and, where applicable, risk assessment reports covering key issues and referrals actioned.
  • Sign off on conducted risk assessments where applicable or necessary.
  • Comply with responsibilities under the Data Protection Acts 1988, 2003, and 2018, including the General Data Protection Regulation.
  • Support the development of appropriate crisis management plans for callers in crisis.
  • Make prompt, in-the-moment decisions about how to proceed when unsure.
  • Ensure a smooth and diligent handover process to the next-shift personnel.
  • Dedicate the entire shift to intellectual tasks and responsibilities only.
  • Prepare psychological reports, risk summaries, and other clinical documentation as required.
Desired Qualifications
  • A background in mental health or emergency services is preferred.
  • Completed training in Crisis Intervention or Suicide Prevention is preferred.
  • Proficiency in multiple languages is preferred.
