The Role:

Generate:Biomedicines is seeking an innovative and experienced visionary Senior Vice President, Drug Design and Preclinical Development to lead and revolutionize the development of new medicines using Generate:Biomedicines’ cutting edge platform.  This role is pivotal in driving forward our unique approach to drug development, deploying both innovative and proven methods to define and advance a pipeline of first- and best-in-class biologics. The ideal candidate will bring significant expertise in protein sciences, protein engineering and drug discovery, together with experience in and enthusiasm for the application of computational and digital approaches to all aspects of drug development.

Given the breadth of the applicability of the company’s technology, the role will manage a complex and broad pipeline of research programs and must be comfortable defining the path for a diverse set of molecules from concept through Phase 1. This executive will have an established level of respect and credibility in the research and development community. They must bring a strong entrepreneurial orientation along with stellar leadership skills and an enthusiasm about developing new methods across functions. The executive will be a member of the Research and Development Leadership Team  and the Senior Leadership Team, and will report to the Head of R&D. The role will oversee critical functions within Generate, including all protein science and preclinical functions.

Here’s how you will contribute: 

The Senior Vice President, Drug Design and Preclinical Development will be responsible for the following:

• Formulate preclinical research strategy, including development and execution of Generate:Biomedicines’s R&D roadmap in partnership with the Head of R&D and the Head of Computational Sciences
• Foster the mutually beneficial development of the platform and portfolio, ensuring advancement of portfolio molecules to the clinic
• Develop a deep understanding of the computational, protein sciences and assays at the Company; unify the involved scientists around a vision for creative and timely advancement of our methods
• Apply an engineering mindset to the productionization of drug development
• Scientific thought leadership, including mentorship of and providing a role model to scientists throughout the organization
• Apply expertise in protein sciences, protein engineering, automation and high-throughput data generation to the platform and to pipeline programs
• Identify, evaluate and translate the latest global scientific and technology developments in academia and industry for the company
• Ensure swift and high-quality execution of research strategy, including dynamic prioritization and trade-offs across a myriad of programs and platform initiatives
• Effectively manage resources/budget with agility to maximize value creation
• Build a diverse, high-performing organization and culture of innovation and execution
• Foster a work environment that encourages creative thinking and the ability maintain focus, persistence and agility in the setting of continuous change and, at times, adversity
• Develop and nurture effective cross-functional relationships across the organization
• Serve as a leading scientific spokesperson for Generate:Biomedicines and effectively represent the company both internally and externally within the scientific, medical and business communities
• Support Generate:Biomedicines’s IP, M&A and licensing activities as needed

The Ideal Candidate will have:

• PhD, MD or MD/PhD degree in scientific discipline
• 15+ years of leadership experience in the biopharmaceutical industry, including experience at the junction of computation and protein sciences
• Technical expertise and strategic/transformational leadership
• Experience in leveraging cutting-edge technologies for biological discovery and drug development
• The ability to consider and debate both deep technical and broad strategic issues
• Skilled at inspiring, building and developing high-performing teams of scientists
• History of successful people management, including attracting and retaining highly qualified world-class talent
• Drive for achievement; results-oriented, active, hands-on manager
• Sound business judgement able to continuously evaluate priorities, alternatives efficient resource management
• Strong external presence in the research community
