  • Willingness to be available outside standard business hours as needed, particularly around travel, periods of heightened activity, or time-sensitive matters.
  • Genuine interest in AI and emerging tools, with eagerness to learn, experiment, and produce tangible, usable deliverables alongside the CEO.

  • Experience working with or alongside systems that impact youth and families, or deep commitment to learning about these systems with humility, curiosity, and care.
  • Active exploration and application of AI tools to improve efficiency and insight and support sound, human-centered decision-making.
  • Must be based in the Washington, DC area.
  • Significant schedule flexibility, including occasional early mornings and, at times, evening, weekend, or travel-related support.

  • Adjust quickly and calmly as priorities and plans shift throughout the day.
  • Prepare the CEO for meetings, conversations, and major decisions with background information, briefing materials, agendas, and participant context.
  • Synthesize complex information into clear, actionable summaries for the CEO ahead of high-stakes conversations.
  • Clarify meeting purpose and desired outcomes in advance and flag missing or unclear agendas.
  • Capture commitments, decisions, and follow-up items in real time and track them to completion.
  • Proactively follow up with the CEO or other stakeholders when action items are at risk of slipping.
  • Coordinate frequent domestic and international professional travel, including detailed itineraries, logistics, and contingency plans.
  • Anticipate travel disruptions, preferences, and timing needs, including international visa and entry and exit requirements, and respond when plans change unexpectedly.
  • Prepare a daily or day-ahead briefing consolidating the CEO’s schedule, key logistics, meeting preparation needs, and pending decisions or follow-ups.
  • Translate ideas and conversations into clear, actionable next steps.
  • Help organize the CEO’s personal priorities and calendar demands, flagging what needs attention now, later, or can be delegated.
  • Ask thoughtful questions that create clarity and flag scheduling conflicts, missing follow-ups, or unresolved meeting action items before they become urgent.
  • Offer perspective on how decisions or commitments may affect the CEO’s schedule, bandwidth, or existing priorities, while leaving final decisions to the CEO.
  • Serve as a sounding board to help shape rough ideas into workable plans.
  • Build strong working relationships with staff, board members, funders, partners, government leaders, and external stakeholders.

  • Navigate sensitive relationships and competing requests with diplomacy and communicate clearly with individuals at all levels.
  • Notice and address needs before they become requests.

  • Help move the CEO’s creative ideas toward practical execution.
  • Explore emerging tools and approaches and bring new ideas to the CEO.

About the company

Think of Us is a nonprofit research and design lab reforming the U.S. child welfare system through partnerships with government, lawmakers, and foundations to design and implement scalable, data-driven solutions at federal, state, and local levels. It centers the lived experiences of foster youth and families and uses technology, data, and design to address root causes such as poverty-related neglect, promote kinship care, and support youth aging out. Its Virtual Support Services provide housing, mental health, and employment resources, and its COVID-19 response helped families access over $50 million in resources and disburse $400 million in federal relief for former foster youth. Funding comes from grants and philanthropic partnerships, including a major $47.5 million Audacious Project commitment with a goal to raise $100 million.

What believers are saying

  • May 2026 Hilton Foundation gave $1.53 million for federal foster care implementation.
  • June 2026 Texas kinship micro-grants show productized support still reaches caregivers.
  • August 2026 donation pages said nearly $50 million committed toward the $100 million campaign.

What critics are saying

  • Grant dependence concentrates risk; Audacious Project funding ends after 2028 if fundraising stalls.
  • Child welfare reforms depend on ACF, HUD, and state adoption cycles, slowing impact.
  • If philanthropic renewals weaken, Think of Us loses operating runway and scale.

What makes Think of Us unique

  • Sixto Cancel built Think of Us from foster-care lived experience, not academic theory.
  • May 2026 Christine Norbut Beyer joined, strengthening federal child welfare implementation credibility.
  • Think of Us combines research, technology, policy, and direct kinship-cash pilots.
