About the job

Requirements
  • Experience with high-voltage battery systems.
  • Ability to work within or lead a technical team of engineers or scientists.
  • Understanding of high-voltage battery design concepts.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and integrate hardware into larger complex systems.
  • Knowledge of battery state estimation and control algorithms.
  • For the Senior Professional level, a bachelor's degree in Engineering or Science and 14 or more years of relevant experience are required.
  • For the Advanced Professional level, a bachelor's degree in Engineering or Science and 5 or more years of relevant experience are required.
  • Must be eligible to obtain a government security clearance, participate in the ARL drug testing program, and comply with applicable electronic and physical monitoring requirements.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
Responsibilities
  • Design and prototype new battery module and pack designs, or improve existing designs, to enhance performance or safety.
  • Investigate and evaluate battery chemistries by assessing emerging technologies through literature reviews, external partnerships, and competitive benchmarking.
  • Use computational tools such as MATLAB/Simulink to model and simulate battery systems and predict performance, thermal behavior, and safety under various conditions.
  • Design experiments and testing protocols for performance, cycle life, thermal stability, electrical stress, and vibration in a laboratory environment.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret data to evaluate performance, identify failure modes, and determine root causes of issues.
  • Conduct safety assessments, perform Design Failure Mode and Effects Analyses (DFMEAs), and ensure designs and processes comply with the U.S. Navy Lithium Battery Safety program and standards.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, software, and fabrication teams to integrate battery components into underwater electric vehicles.

  • For higher-level positions, contribute to the design, development, implementation, and analysis of technical engineering products, systems, and subsystems.
  • Investigate the practical applicability of scientific theories and engineering principles to develop and improve engineering systems, and identify technical approaches to solve problems and meet customer or grantor needs.
  • Apply standard practices and techniques, correlate data, recognize discrepancies in results, and follow operations through related steps or processes.
  • Conduct laboratory or field experiments and tests to test, prove, or modify theoretical propositions based on research findings and others' experience in related technical areas; tasks may include taking measurements and recording observations, collecting, compiling, and processing data, planning or designing experiments or tests, and supervising their execution.
Desired Qualifications
  • Successful technical publications in peer-reviewed journals or conference proceedings.
  • Current eligibility for access to classified information at the Secret level or higher; may be subject to a government background investigation to upgrade clearance eligibility if required.
