Requirements
  • An Associate’s Degree in hospitality management, culinary, hotel restaurant management, or business with experience in food operations, or a High School Diploma with two years of experience in food service operations.
  • An understanding of the importance of excellent customer service and cost controls.
  • TIPS certification is required within the first year of employment.
  • ServSafe/HACCP certification is required within the first year of employment.
  • Anti-harassment workshop attendance is required within the first year of employment.
  • Strong customer service, communication, organizational, creativity, and time-management skills are required.
  • Training of all hourly employees is required.
  • Knowledge of food presentation and preparation and of health, safety, and alcohol codes is required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and strong interpersonal skills are required.
  • A flexible schedule, including nights and weekends, is required.
Responsibilities
  • Oversee the setup, service, and breakdown of on-campus and off-campus catering events by coordinating event needs and logistics with the Dining Services management team.
  • Participate in and supervise food production, service, and sanitation for catering events while ensuring food quality, presentation, and service standards.
  • Direct and relay customer expectations to staff and management.
  • Supervise hourly employees and provide leadership and task coordination to staff assigned to events, including assigning job duties.
  • Ensure New York State Health Codes are followed for food temperatures, cross-contamination, service, and storage.
  • Evaluate client needs, coordinate catering event details, and respond to client requests.
  • Assist the Catering Manager with menu development, event billing, posting catering sheets, and completing work orders.
  • Assist with special themed dinners in the dining hall throughout the academic year.
  • Assist with the development of catering staff and help ensure staff meet departmental requirements, the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and departmental policies.
  • Monitor staff work habits and assist staff in developing safe practices.
  • Promote customer service by addressing customer needs and processing customer change requests.
  • Circulate and update event sheets and communicate with the bake shop, catering chefs, receiving staff, and Dining Services managers.
  • Assist with processing work orders for catering events, dining hall setups, and retail setups.
  • Support all Dining Services locations and assist other Assistant Supervisors in maintaining dining operations, staffing, supplies, and appearance.
Desired Qualifications
  • College or university food service management experience is preferred.
  • Experience working with unions is preferred.
