About the Job

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience developing Guidance, Navigation, and Control subsystems, including algorithms and sensors.
  • At least 5 years of experience in spacecraft systems engineering, including failure mode analysis.
  • A good understanding of software capabilities and functionality in programming languages such as C/C++ and Python.
  • Experience using software control systems such as Git.
  • Experience with closed-loop frameworks such as MIL, SIL, PIL, and HIL, including developing sensor and actuator models and interfaces for components such as Sun sensors, IMUs, star trackers, and propulsion systems.
  • Hands-on experience with spacecraft system-level testing, including SCLT, DOLT, and DCLT.
  • Business-level English communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee end-to-end development of the lunar lander's orbiter system from the GNC subsystem perspective, including design, verification, and operations.
  • Develop orbiter GNC designs and perform GNC analysis, including guidance-law design and analysis, control-law design and performance analysis, thruster-duty analysis, delta-V analysis, attitude-dynamics analysis, sloshing and flexible-dynamics analysis, navigation-filter design, covariance analysis, and GNC sensor evaluation, using control-engineering tools and software development activities.
  • Design the system and orbiter GNC subsystem using FMECA and MCFMA methodologies.
  • Plan, implement, and execute verification and validation for the orbiter system from component-level GNC sensor testing through system-level testing, including SCLT, DOLT, and DCLT, as well as nominal, off-nominal, and fault simulations for orbit operations.
  • Define requirements specifications for OGNC flight software and algorithms.
  • Develop GNC subsystem requirements, design, constraints, and operations, and coordinate technical interfaces with systems engineering and other subsystems, including propulsion, structures, thermal, avionics, flight software, mission planning, and operations.
  • Define OGNC unit specifications based on OGNC system requirements and design specifications.
  • Support lander system design by providing GNC feasibility studies and design inputs for key system trade-offs, including actuator and sensor configuration and selection, component layout, controllability, delta-V, and RCS budget.
  • Support the selection, verification, and operational readiness of key orbiter system components, including Sun sensors, IMUs, star trackers, and propulsion systems, from technical and theoretical perspectives.
  • Support the design and troubleshooting of GNC flight-software algorithms and components, and propose solutions to mitigate GNC subsystem errors and malfunctions.
  • Document GNC subsystem technical specifications, including the functions and relationships with other subsystems.
  • Support mission operations and preparation activities.
  • Support development studies for space vehicles for future missions.

Desired Qualifications

  • At least 10 years of experience developing Guidance, Navigation, and Control subsystems, including algorithms and sensors.
  • At least 10 years of systems-engineering experience in the space industry.
  • Experience with spacecraft operations.
  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Experience integrating software written in different programming languages, including C/C++, Python, and MATLAB.
  • Experience implementing real-time flight software.
  • Business-level Japanese communication skills, including speaking and writing.

About the Company

ispace

Lunar payload transport and data services

ispace develops lunar exploration and resource development, offering two main services: Payload Services, which transports customer payloads to lunar orbit or the surface using its robotic landers and rovers, and Data Services, which collects and provides lunar data for mission planning and surface development. It differentiates itself by owning its own lunar hardware, using agile development with commercially off-the-shelf components to cut costs, and pursuing a cadence of Hakuto-R missions to establish a regular cislunar transport system, while partnering with NASA under CLPS and with ESA. Its goal is to enable a growing lunar economy by delivering reliable, affordable access to the Moon for scientists, governments, and industry and by advancing the utilization of lunar resources such as water ice.
