About the Job

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent is required.
  • At the Level 4 scope, at least 8 years of experience in spacecraft or high-reliability electrical power systems engineering, with meaningful ownership of an energy storage or power-conditioning segment, is required.
  • At the Level 5 scope, at least 12 years of experience, including at least one program carried from requirements definition through Critical Design Review or later, is required.
  • Demonstrated systems-level work with lithium-ion energy storage, including architecture and sizing, series and parallel topology trades, management and protection function allocation, isolation and grounding treatment, and charge and discharge control concepts.
  • Working understanding of power electronics across the interface, including charge and discharge regulation, current limiting, and protection, sufficient to challenge supplier designs and assess their claims.
  • Ability to author engineering documentation that passes external review, including requirement specifications, interface control documents, power quality specifications, analysis reports, verification plans, and test procedures.
  • Modeling and analysis capability in MATLAB and Simulink, Python, or equivalent, including energy-balance models, degradation models, and circuit- or system-level simulation.
  • Experience working with requirements in a managed environment such as Jama, DOORS, or equivalent, including traceability, baselines, and change control.
  • Direct experience managing technical scope with suppliers and subcontractors, including specification, negotiation, data package review, and issue recovery.
  • Track record of delivering outcomes in ambiguous, fast-moving environments and delivering high-quality results under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to use good judgment to solve problems proactively and positively impact difficult challenges.
  • Organization skills to meet tight deadlines while delivering high-quality results.
  • Must be willing to work evenings and weekends as needed to meet critical project milestones.
  • Must meet any export-control screening requirements needed to access technical data or technology subject to NASA regulations, ITAR, or EAR; meeting these requirements is a condition of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Own the energy storage requirements for cells, modules, vaults, management and protection functions, charge and discharge regulation, isolation monitoring, telemetry, and commanding. Decompose station- and module-level power requirements into verifiable equipment-level requirements and maintain bidirectional traceability in the program requirements management tool.
  • Write requirements as system properties rather than implementations; maintain verifiability and a single source of truth, and ensure every TBD, TBC, and TBR has a named owner and closing event.
  • Build, run, and defend system-sizing analyses covering orbit-average power and energy balance, eclipse and contingency energy budgets, depth of discharge and life degradation to end of service, charge taper and return-to-full-charge time, effects of state-of-charge estimation error, and energy availability after credible failures.
  • Define electrical interfaces between the battery and charge/discharge regulation functions, and author or co-author interface control documents covering voltage envelopes, constant-power operating corners, inhibit commands and response timing, protection coordination, telemetry content and rates, isolation and grounding, and connector and harness definition.
  • Own power quality at the storage interface, including steady-state limits, ripple and noise, transient response during mode transitions such as eclipse entry and exit, and interface stability margin.
  • Develop verification and validation strategies and matrices for cell-lot screening and acceptance, module- and vault-level testing, integrated-string and system-level testing, environmental and EMC test participation, and pass/fail acceptance criteria.
  • Support safety and hazard analyses for high-voltage energy storage, including thermal-runaway initiation and propagation, single-fault tolerance, inadvertent energization and discharge, off-nominal charging, isolation loss, and related controls, verifications, and safety data package content.
  • Lead technical content for supplier engagement, including statements of work, procurement specifications, request-for-proposal technical packages, rough-order-of-magnitude and proposal technical evaluations, supplier data package reviews, deviation and waiver disposition, and recovery planning for supplier delays.
  • Integrate the energy storage segment with the rest of the vehicle, coordinating with thermal and structures teams on vault installation and heat rejection; avionics and flight software on control, telemetry, and fault detection, isolation, and recovery; operations on on-orbit procedures and constraints; and logistics on orbital replaceable unit sparing and on-orbit maintenance.
  • Prepare, present, and defend material at System Requirements Review, Preliminary Design Review, Critical Design Review, Test Readiness Review, Manufacturing Readiness Review, and Flight Readiness Review, including for NASA and international partner audiences, and drive review actions to closure.
  • Communicate technical status, risk, and options clearly to stakeholders and leadership, stating assumptions and uncertainty.
  • Perform additional job duties as assigned.

Desired Qualifications

  • An advanced degree is preferred.
  • Human spaceflight or crewed-vehicle experience and familiarity with the associated safety review process.
  • Familiarity with ISS power standards and practices, including SSP 30237, SSP 52051, NASA-STD-4003, MSFC-STD-3790, and JSC-20793 cell screening.
  • Experience with thermal-runaway propagation testing, battery safety testing, or cell-lot acceptance campaigns.
  • Experience with orbital replaceable unit design, sparing strategy, and on-orbit maintenance concepts.
  • Experience defining fault detection, isolation, and recovery and developing operations products.
  • INCOSE certification or equivalent demonstrated systems-engineering practice.

About the Company

Axiom Space

End-to-end human spaceflight missions and infrastructure

Axiom Space provides human spaceflight services and space infrastructure development. It conducts missions to the International Space Station (ISS) and is building the Axiom Station as a commercial destination in low-Earth orbit. The company also designs and develops next-generation spacesuits (Extravehicular Mobility Units) for use in space. Its clients include private individuals and national astronauts, and it offers end-to-end space missions that cover training, launch, stay, and return. Revenue comes from charging for missions and future sales of spacesuits and other space-related infrastructure. Axiom Space collaborates with NASA and Thales Alenia Space and aims to create the world's first commercial space station, expanding how humans live and work in space with a mission to advance civilization.
