About the company

What believers are saying

  • Growth is steady: July 2026 results showed second-quarter revenue up 13% to $12.6 billion, with a 33.4% operating margin.
  • Advertising is scaling fast: in July 2026, Netflix forecast ad revenue roughly doubling to about $3 billion this year.
  • Pay aims high: Netflix's culture memo says it pays each person's personal top of market for role and location.

What critics are saying

  • Cuts are on the table: Puck reported in October 2026 that Netflix is weighing layoffs of about 5% of staff.
  • The performance bar is unforgiving: managers apply a keeper test, asking whether they would fight to keep each employee.
  • YouTube draws more TV viewing: figures reported in October 2026 put it at 14.2% of TV time, Netflix at 7.8%.

What makes Netflix unique

  • Scale is its moat: Netflix passed 325 million paid memberships by the end of 2025, serving nearly a billion viewers.
  • Non-English shows carry real weight: they drew over a third of Netflix viewing in the first half of 2026.
  • It owns its ad technology: the in-house Netflix Ads Suite has run in all 12 ad-tier countries since mid-2025.

Netflix shares fall 5% as Sarandos bets on live events despite $12.9B Q3 revenue

Netflix shares fell more than 5% overnight after the company beat third-quarter earnings estimates but gave a weak outlook for the fourth quarter. It earned $0.87 per share on $12.9 billion in revenue, against analysts' estimate of $0.82 per share. Co-chief executive officer Ted Sarandos said Netflix wants to be "the last service they'd ever cancel." He said original films and series, plus live events such as boxing and NFL and MLB programming, "drive new membership" and "add fuel to our ad revenues." Revenue growth has slowed for a fourth straight quarter amid rising competition. Netflix cut about 1,000 jobs last week. The stock is down 26% this year.

Netflix co-CEO admits US content needs work as shares slide 6% after earnings

Netflix needs to make better shows and movies in the US, co-chief executive officer Ted Sarandos said on the company's third-quarter earnings call on Tuesday. "We do need better execution in the US," he told investors. Sarandos said US content is working, but "not growing as fast as it could." The US and Canada made up about 44% of revenue this quarter, or $5.6 billion. Last week, Netflix replaced content chief Bela Bajaria with former Disney and Fox executive Peter Rice. It is also moving on from film chief Dan Lin, and Rice will oversee movies until the role is filled. Netflix also cut roughly 1,000 workers, its biggest round of reductions since 2022. Its shares fell 6% in after-hours trading after the report showed a third straight quarter of slowing revenue growth.

Netflix shares fall 5% as Q4 revenue forecast of $13.44B misses estimates

Netflix shares fell 5% in after-hours trading on Tuesday after the streaming company forecast fourth-quarter revenue of $13.44 billion, below analyst expectations of $13.51 billion. Third-quarter revenue was $12.87 billion, in line with estimates. Earnings per share of $0.87 beat the $0.82 forecast. "This kind of speaks to a slowing growth algorithm, which kind of spells trouble for the company without a doubt," said Geetha Ranganathan, senior media analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence. Last week, Netflix named former Disney executive Peter Rice as chief content officer and said it would cut 6% of its workforce, about 1,000 jobs. The stock is down roughly 48% from its June 2025 record high.

Netflix shares slide ahead of results, with $12.87B revenue expected after 1,000 job cuts

Netflix shares fell on Tuesday ahead of its third-quarter results. Wall Street expects earnings per share of $0.83 and revenue of $12.87 billion. The stock is down about 48% from its June 2025 record high and roughly 25% this year, as user engagement has stalled. Last week, Netflix named former Disney executive Peter Rice its chief content officer, replacing Bela Bajaria. It also said it would cut 6% of its workforce, about 1,000 jobs, its largest reduction since 2022. The moves come as the company tries to revive viewership growth amid competition and a shift to short-form video on mobile devices. Earlier this year, Paramount outbid Netflix for Warner Bros. Discovery in a revised $111 billion deal, including debt.

Netflix loses cultural buzz as viewing share falls to 7.8% and shares drop 26%

Netflix has lost the thing that set it apart from other streamers: a show or film that captures the cultural moment. Its share of US TV viewing fell to 7.8% in July from 8.8% a year earlier, according to Nielsen, while Prime Video, Peacock and Paramount+ gained. Last week the company said it would cut 6% of its staff and replace chief content officer Bela Bajaria with Peter Rice, a Walt Disney Co. and 21st Century Fox veteran. Film chief Dan Lin is also leaving. Rice takes over on October 26. Netflix shares are down about 26% this year. On Tuesday, the company is expected to report its weakest revenue growth in three years. Rivals make fewer, more targeted titles, while Netflix added some 440 in 2025 alone.
