Chuck Schumer slams Hyde Amendment on 50th anniversary, says abortion restrictions force Americans to choose between care, rent, food: 'health care must not be a privilege'

Chuck Schumer slams Hyde Amendment on 50th anniversary, says abortion restrictions force Americans to choose between care, rent, food: 'health care must not be a privilege' Snigdha Gairola Sat, October 3, 2026 at 1:30 PM PDT Benzinga and Yahoo Finance LLC may earn commission or revenue on some items through the links below. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) marked the 50th anniversary of the Hyde Amendment by arguing that its restrictions on federal abortion funding have created financial barriers for low-income Americans seeking abortion care. Schumer criticizes Hyde Amendment. On Wednesday, Schumer said on X that the Hyde Amendment had spent five decades limiting access to abortion care for people who could not afford to pay out of pocket. "Today the Hyde Amendment turns 50 years old," he wrote. He described it as "50 years of denying critical abortion care to people who can't afford it." Don't Miss: Schumer said the policy had forced people to choose between health care and essential expenses, including "rent, food, child care, or other necessities." He also argued that the amendment had made access to health care dependent on a person's financial circumstances. "Health care must not be a privilege for people who can afford it," Schumer said. Today the Hyde Amendment turns 50 years old. 50 years of denying critical abortion care to people who can't afford it. 50 years of forcing people to choose between paying for health care and paying for rent, food, child care, or other necessities. 50 years of making access to... - Chuck Schumer (@SenSchumer) September 30, 2026 Schumer criticized VA abortion policy. Last year, Schumer criticized the Trump administration's policy restricting abortion access for veterans, calling it a "betrayal." He said the policy barred veterans from obtaining abortion care even in cases of rape, incest and life-threatening complications, describing it as a "war against access to safe abortion." Health care access and AI. On Monday, Eli Lilly and Company launched the Lilly Change the Course Commitment to expand access to diabetes and obesity treatments in low- and middle-income countries by 2040, focusing on clinical development, medicine registrations and local health systems. In July, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said broad support existed for affordable health care, stronger public schools and infrastructure investment, including in politically competitive and Republican-leaning areas. Previously, Microsoft Corp. AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman said health care could be AI's most important application as Microsoft and Mayo Clinic partnered to develop a health care-focused AI model aimed at improving diagnoses, treatment decisions and patient outcomes. Building wealth across more than just the market. Building a resilient portfolio means thinking beyond a single asset or market trend. Economic cycles shift, sectors rise and fall, and no one investment performs well in every environment. That's why many investors look to diversify with platforms that provide access to real estate, fixed-income opportunities, precious metals, and even self-directed retirement accounts. By spreading exposure across multiple asset classes, it becomes easier to manage risk, capture steady returns, and create long-term wealth that isn't tied to the fortunes of just one company or industry. Arrived. Backed by Jeff Bezos, Arrived Homes makes real estate investing accessible with a low barrier to entry. Investors can buy fractional shares of single-family rentals and vacation homes starting with as little as $100. This allows everyday investors to diversify into real estate, collect rental income, and build long-term wealth without needing to manage properties directly. Realberry. For accredited investors looking beyond traditional stocks and bonds, Realberry provides access to institutional-quality real estate investments, including a preferred equity opportunity in the 297-room Hyatt Place Boston Seaport. The firm has invested across multiple property types and markets, with 13 million square feet of real estate across seven U.S. states and $481 million in cumulative distributions paid to investors as of Q4 2025. Skybound Entertainment. Entertainment franchises can become valuable long-term assets when they successfully expand across multiple platforms. Skybound Entertainment, the company behind The Walking Dead and Invincible, develops original intellectual property that spans comics, television, film, video games, merchandise, and licensing. With more than 250 IPs in its portfolio and a strategy focused on retaining franchise rights while scaling successful stories across media, Skybound offers investors exposure to the growing entertainment and creator economy through a private company rather than traditional public market investments. American PowerGen. As artificial intelligence drives a surge in electricity demand, reliable power generation is becoming a critical part of the technology ecosystem. American PowerGen is developing natural gas-fired power plants in Texas, a fast-growing market fueled by AI data centers, manufacturing expansion, and population growth. By advancing projects through permitting, fuel supply, and grid interconnection, the company is positioning itself to help meet rising energy needs while offering investors exposure to the infrastructure supporting the next wave of AI and industrial growth. EquityMultiple. For accredited investors looking beyond stocks and bonds, EquityMultiple provides access to vetted commercial real estate deals starting at $5,000, with only ~5% of opportunities passing their due diligence process. FarmTogether. Farmland has historically held its value through market volatility and delivered returns uncorrelated to stocks and bonds. For accredited investors, FarmTogether offers direct access to high-quality U.S. farmland starting at $15,000 - fully managed, with no landlord headaches. Fundrise. Private real estate and private credit can add income and stability to a stock-heavy portfolio. Fundrise offers access to diversified private real estate and credit strategies through an easy-to-use platform, with professionally managed portfolios designed to generate passive income and long-term growth.

South County Health joins Mayo Clinic Care Network.

South County Health joins Mayo Clinic Care Network. Posted: Oct 2, 2026 / 06:00 AM EDT Updated: Oct 2, 2026 / 06:37 AM EDT WAKEFIELD, R.I. (WPRI) - South County Health is set to launch a partnership with the Mayo Clinic Care Network next week, Target 12 has learned. The healthcare organization will be the first in Rhode Island to join the "select group of independent healthcare organizations carefully vetted by Minnesota-based Mayo Clinic and granted special access to Mayo Clinic's knowledge, expertise and resources," according to a news release from South County Health. SCH President and CEO Aaron Robinson told Target 12 that the health system has been in talks with Mayo Clinic for the past nine months. "Bringing the world's number one health system to Rhode Island is an opportunity for us not only to deliver the great care we always have, but really to bring a top health system into Rhode Island," Robinson said. Robinson said he is hopeful that the partnership will be able to let residents stay in Rhode Island to receive the care they need. "You often hear people saying they need to go to Boston for more complex issues, or if they want a second opinion," Robinson said. "We often joke about Rhode Islanders not liking to drive too far, but they do if they feel like they need to for a world class healthcare consult, and so now we don't believe that they'll have to." Beginning on Oct. 8, SCH providers and physicians can access Mayo Clinic's latest research, diagnostic, and treatment recommendations. "It's an enhancement to their care of their patients," Robinson said. In addition to having digital access to online resources like "AskMayoExpert" and the Mayo Clinic Platform, which uses advanced digital and AI-enabled clinical tools, physicians and their patients will be able to have direct connections with Mayo Clinic specialists and experts. "I just want people to feel reassured that that they are getting the best of both worlds as it relates to human knowledge," Robinson said. "Artificial intelligence can really advance healthcare with the most trusted brand in healthcare in the Mayo Clinic." Physicians can also have their patients presented to Mayo's multidisciplinary boards, according to Robinson. "They can send the pathology of the diagnostic workup to that multidisciplinary team, and you can have that multidisciplinary team of experts at Mayo review your case and then consult back with your oncologist locally to agree on the clinical protocol that's going to be put in place," Robinson added. The tools come at no extra cost to the patient, according to Robinson. He declined to comment on specifics of the hospital group's agreement with Mayo. "It's a modest investment, but one we think will pay dividends, not only clinically, but financially in the long-run," Robinson said. "We expect it to be a long-term engagement." Renew Biotechnologies enters collaboration to evaluate NeuroLens(R) in multiple sclerosis and related neuroimmunologic diseases.

Renew Biotechnologies enters collaboration to evaluate NeuroLens(R) in multiple sclerosis and related neuroimmunologic diseases. Oct 01, 2026, 07:17 ET Cell-of-origin insights could deepen understanding of CNS injury and disease progression in multiple sclerosis and related diseases PLEASANT GROVE, Utah, Oct. 1, 2026 /PRNewswire/ - Renew Biotechnologies today announced a clinical development collaboration with Mayo Clinic to evaluate NeuroLens(R), Renew's cell-free DNA (cfDNA)-based approach, in multiple sclerosis (MS) and related neuroimmunologic diseases. The collaboration seeks to address the need for minimally invasive biomarkers that can provide greater insight into active central nervous system (CNS) injury and how it changes over time, with the longer-term goal of supporting more informed, individualized patient care. Building on Renew's prior research in Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the study will examine cfDNA cell-of-origin signatures associated with cell death across clinically characterized neuroimmunologic disease populations. The research will focus on injury signatures associated with neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendroglial cells and seeks to assess how these signals relate to disease differentiation, phenotype, stage, severity, and progression. Under the agreement, Mayo Clinic brings clinical expertise and access to well-characterized biorepository resources that could help guide this research. This includes informing clinically meaningful study designs, identifying relevant clinical proof points, and providing characterized samples needed to evaluate how NeuroLens signals relate to disease presentation and progression. "Complex neurological diseases present clinical questions that require both strong molecular tools and deep clinical context," said Chad Pollard, Co-Founder and CEO of Renew Biotechnologies. "Working with Mayo Clinic will help us explore new applications for NeuroLens, and provide insights as we seek to expand its potential to benefit patients across a broader range of neurological diseases." The research is slated to initially focus on MS, with the potential to expand into additional neuroimmunologic diseases as study criteria are met. Investigators plan to examine relationships between cell-of-origin signals and disease phenotype, progression, relapse activity, treatment response, and disability over time, with the goal of better understanding how these molecular insights could ultimately support disease assessment and more informed patient care. About Renew Biotechnologies Renew Biotechnologies is a translational diagnostics company focused on resolving disease-specific molecular signals to advance research, diagnostic, and therapeutic development.
