About the job

Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree with 3 years of related experience, a master's degree with 1 year of related experience, or a PhD with 0 years of related experience in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Hands-on experience with radiation effects testing or characterization through university research, an internship, or employment, including single-event effects and total ionizing dose.
  • Experience developing Python software for instrument control, test automation, or data acquisition.
  • Experience with schematic capture and printed circuit board layout using Altium Designer or a comparable electronic design tool, along with hands-on hardware debugging.
  • Working knowledge of analog and digital circuits and laboratory electrical measurement, including configuring bias conditions and monitoring device behavior.
  • Experience with embedded C or C++ and microcontroller- or FPGA-based hardware.
  • Ability to document experimental methods and results, communicate findings, and complete assigned technical work with senior technical review.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain reusable Python software to configure instruments, sequence measurements, log data, and support automated single-event effects and total ionizing dose testing.
  • Design schematics and printed circuit board layouts for device biasing, monitoring, functional testing, and electrical characterization before, during, and after irradiation.
  • Integrate programmable power supplies, source measure units, digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, function generators, and relay or switch matrices; select and configure instruments to meet each test's measurement and protection needs.
  • Develop embedded software and device interfaces for microcontroller, FPGA, and system-on-chip test platforms; implement functional monitoring, error detection, and recovery appropriate for each device, with senior support for FPGA architecture and hardware description language development as needed.
  • Prepare devices and evaluation boards for radiation testing by establishing operating conditions, isolating the device under test, and verifying monitoring and measurement paths.
  • Support single-event effects testing at accelerator facilities and total ionizing dose testing in the laboratory, including setup, execution, troubleshooting, and configuration control.
  • Analyze upsets, transients, latchup, burnout, and dose-dependent parameter degradation as applicable to the device; document test conditions, identify measurement limitations, and assess uncertainty in the results.
  • Write test plans and reports, document hardware and software, and present results to colleagues and project teams.
  • Work with device, systems, and mission assurance engineers to relate test results to application needs.
Desired Qualifications
  • A master's degree with coursework or research focused on radiation effects in microelectronics.
  • Research on the radiation response of advanced CMOS technologies, memories, or power semiconductors, including silicon carbide.
  • FPGA firmware development using VHDL or Verilog and experience with FPGA or system-on-chip development tools.
  • Analog measurement circuit design and interfaces for memories, high-speed digital devices, or mixed-signal components.
  • Statistical analysis of experimental data, including event counting, cross-section estimation, confidence intervals, or uncertainty evaluation.
  • Technical publications or conference presentations in radiation effects, microelectronics reliability, or related fields.
  • Fundamental understanding of radiation effects basic mechanisms.

About the company

NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory

View

NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is a federal research center managed by Caltech for NASA. It designs, builds, and operates robotic space missions for planetary exploration, Earth science, and space-based astronomy, along with technology development. JPL translates scientific ideas into real missions using specialized engineering, software, and mission operations conducted by cross-disciplinary teams, often in collaboration with NASA centers and other partners. Unlike many contractors, JPL functions as a government-run R&D center that directly plans and executes missions from concept through flight operations, ensuring national-space capabilities and scientific discovery stay aligned with NASA's goals. The lab’s aim is to turn bold science questions into working space missions and technologies that advance our understanding of the solar system and Earth, while upholding values of being bold, inclusive, and trusted.

What believers are saying

  • Congress funded NASA at $24.4 billion on January 16, 2026, stabilizing JPL.
  • FAME demonstrations started June 2026, targeting near-real-time wildfire and flood alerts.
  • JPL still manages dozens of missions, preserving customer trust and technical relevance.

What critics are saying

  • JPL cut 550 jobs in October 2025 after earlier 2024-2025 layoffs.
  • Mars Sample Return cancellation erased JPL's flagship program and funding base.
  • Persistent budget cuts and telework exodus threaten JPL's Caltech-managed lab model.

What makes NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory unique

  • JPL runs more than three dozen flying missions across Earth science and planetary exploration.
  • Loft Orbital's June 23, 2026 partnership puts JPL AI on orbit.
  • Howard Eisen and Keyur Patel anchor mission success and chief-engineering discipline.

Loft Orbital to deploy NASA JPL's AI software for real-time Earth disaster monitoring

Loft Orbital has secured an agreement with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to host and demonstrate AI software on its space infrastructure. The collaboration, part of JPL's Federated Autonomous MEasurement project funded by NASA's Earth Science Technology Office, will advance on-orbit AI capabilities for Earth science remote sensing. Flight demonstrations began in June 2026, with additional deployments scheduled through 2028. JPL's AI software aims to reduce data latency by processing information in near-real time, delivering urgent insights on wildfires, flooding and natural disasters to emergency responders. The spacecraft will demonstrate autonomous tip-and-queue tasking without ground intervention using intersatellite links. Founded in 2017, Loft Orbital has flown over 25 missions and operates facilities in San Francisco, Colorado and Toulouse, France.
