Roadway knowledge should include terrain modeling; geometry and corridor modeling, including template and corridor development; site modeling, including surface templates and civil cells; item types; development and enhancement of roadway resources, including feature definitions and annotation groups; and related production efforts, including reports, tables, and plan/profile/section production.
  • Drainage knowledge should include hydrology and runoff determination; placement and analysis of system components, including nodes, pipes, culverts, and channels; development and enhancement of drainage resources, including IDF curves, feature definitions, prototypes, and 3D drainage cells; and related production efforts, including reports, tables, and plan/profile/section production.
  • At least 5 years of experience using ProjectWise for project development efforts, including ProjectWise Explorer, ProjectWise Drive, and Bentley Infrastructure Cloud or similar technology.
  • Experience with AEC digital delivery concepts, including Model-as-Legal-Document, data-centric project delivery, digital twins, and relevant expectations established by ISO, FHWA, AASHTO, and state transportation agencies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing others' technical capabilities through mentoring, technical presentations, training development, standards documentation, workflow governance, and collaborative problem-solving discussions.
  • Experience collaborating with multiple AEC stakeholders—including software vendors, Digital Transformation teams, IT professionals, and engineering practitioners—to resolve complex problems and improve engineering workflows and project delivery outcomes.
Responsibilities
  • Serve as the engineering technology owner for select technologies throughout their lifecycle. Evaluate hardware, software, and cloud solutions for viability, effectiveness, and deployment suitability; assess functionality, usability, database and cloud-storage compatibility, integrations, and third-party add-ons; identify and prioritize related special projects; and coordinate deployment changes with internal teams.
  • Serve as an expert leader with technical practitioners, project teams, communities of practice, technical steering committees, and business stakeholders to support effective application and adoption of select engineering technologies.
  • Lead discussions about select engineering technologies in new and established forums, gather and communicate stakeholder feedback, share technical knowledge, and contribute to initiatives that improve workflows, standards, support services, and project delivery.
  • Develop, document, communicate, deliver, and maintain technical workflows, standards, guidance, and training that improve project-delivery quality, consistency, and efficiency. Create technical documentation and learning materials; provide knowledge transfer through classroom instruction, virtual learning, hands-on coaching, demonstrations, and other appropriate methods; coordinate subject-matter-expert contributions; evaluate feedback and adoption results; keep knowledge assets current and scalable across projects, disciplines, and offices; and champion organizational change to knowledge-management systems.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to practitioners using select engineering technologies throughout the project-delivery lifecycle. Respond to user questions, investigate technology and workflow issues, identify and document solutions, coordinate with internal teams or vendor support, communicate with affected users, and contribute support knowledge that improves issue resolution, reliability, and user effectiveness. Develop improvements to workflows, standards, training, configurations, and support processes that reduce future issues, and coordinate critical ideas and defects with vendors through resolution.
  • Coordinate HNTB technical staff and vendor personnel for select engineering technologies. Organize and lead recurring business review meetings to influence vendor roadmaps and coordinate service strategies; maintain productive vendor relationships; collaborate with vendor support and technical teams to investigate issues, evaluate capabilities, communicate business needs, and identify enhancements; track support requests, defects, product limitations, and enhancement opportunities through resolution; keep stakeholders informed; and assist internal teams with vendor contract language and product-license usage and consumption.
  • Champion technology initiatives by evaluating compatibility, functionality, performance, and operational impacts within the technology ecosystem and project-delivery environment. Conduct research, testing, validation, and documentation; identify risks and opportunities; support implementation; and recommend informed technology decisions. Initiatives may involve software upgrades, licensing changes, operating-system updates, virtual-desktop solutions, graphics hardware, integrations, and emerging technologies. Assess cross-functional impacts, develop mitigation and adoption plans, and influence implementation and purchasing decisions through technical analysis.
  • Research developments in engineering practices, client requirements, delivery standards, and emerging technologies that may affect transportation engineering workflows and project delivery. Evaluate new concepts, tools, standards, and methodologies; share findings with practitioners and stakeholders; identify capability gaps; advise business and technology leaders on long-term opportunities, risks, modernization priorities, and investments; and develop actionable plans to improve technology decisions and project execution. Areas may include engineering analysis, model-based workflows, digital delivery, information management, geographic information systems, and emerging industry trends.

Amtrak moves ahead with planning for two Maryland bridge projects.

Amtrak moves ahead with planning for two Maryland bridge projects. David Lassen Fri, October 9, 2026 at 4:03 PM PDT EDGEWOOD, Md. - Amtrak has selected infrastructure and architectural design firm HNTB to provide architectural and engineering services for two bridge replacement projects in Maryland, the passenger operator has announced. The Gunpowder River Bridge and Bush River Bridge are about 7.5 miles apart on the Northeast Corridor between Chase and Aberdeen, Md. Each carries more than 100 Amtrak, MARC, and Norfolk Southern trains per day. Both date to 1913. Amtrak says they are approaching the end of their useful lives, require frequent maintenance, and limit train speeds to 125 mph. The movable Bush River Bridge also requires a 20-person crew to be opened for marine traffic during summer weekends. Its replacement will be a fixed-span structure. The replacement bridges will allow speeds up to 145 mph on the Gunpowder River Bridge and 160 mph on the Bush River Bridge; the replacement projects also include track, signal, and electric traction infrastructure improvements over a 10-mile segment of the NEC. "These projects are two important examples of Amtraks long-term vision to modernize the Northeast Corridor's century-old tunnels, bridges, and more," Laura Mason, Amtrak executive vice president, capital delivery, said in a press release. Plans call for preliminary engineering to be completed by 2029. The engineering phase is being supported by a Federal Railroad Administration grant, along with contributions from Amtrak and the Maryland Transit Administration. Funding has not yet been allocated for final design and construction. "These projects represent an important opportunity to continue our longstanding partnership with Amtrak on infrastructure that is essential to the Northeast Corridor," Christian Brown, HNTB project manager, said in a press release. "Our team looks forward to collaborating to develop solutions that align with Amtrak's operational goals while supporting reliable service throughout the life of the project."
