The company said the facility can provide enough clean power for 35,000 homes per day, based upon two charging and discharging cycles per day. Masdar added that the plant can respond to fluctuations in electricity supply and demand within milliseconds and will provide grid balancing services. Rochdale is the second Masdar BESS project to start commercial operations in the UK, following the 20MW/40MWh Welkin Road project in Stockport beginning commercial operations last December. The company has committed to investing £1 billion to develop a 3GWh pipeline of BESS projects in the UK following its acquisition of Arlington Energy in 2022. Masdar is also developing projects in Chesterfield and Cardiff with a combined capacity of 150MW/300MWh. Project financing for the four projects was completed last month, with Masdar securing up to £97 million from SMBC and ING. "Beginning commercial operations at our Rochdale facility is a key milestone in our £1 billion commitment to UK battery storage," said Husain Al Meer, Executive Director, Global Offshore Wind & UK, Masdar. Built to international safety and security standards, Masdar's BESS projects incorporate state-of-the-art fire detection and suppression systems, 24-hour CCTV monitoring, and local response capability. The company's UK BESS projects are also being built in close consultation with local stakeholders to ensure they deliver positive impact on local communities and provide tangible national economic benefit. Global storage leadership As electricity demand accelerates, driven by electrification and the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital infrastructure, Masdar is strengthening its global leadership position in battery storage. Last October, Masdar broke ground in Abu Dhabi on the world's first gigascale 24/7 solar and battery storage project, which will combine a 5.2 GW solar plant with a 19 GWh BESS to deliver up to 1 GW of baseload power every day. ScottishPower Renewables and Masdar complete foundation installation at £4 billion East Anglia THREE offshore wind farm. 18th August 2026 ScottishPower Renewables and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC - Masdar have completed the installation of all 95 foundations at the £4 billion East Anglia THREE offshore wind farm off the Suffolk coast, marking a major construction milestone for the 1.4 GW project. The project's 95 monopiles, weighing between 1,200 and 1,800 tonnes each and standing up to 84 metres tall, are among the largest installed from a jack-up vessel in Europe. Installation of all 95 transition pieces, each measuring 20 metres in height, 8 metres in diameter and weighing more than 400 tonnes, has also been completed. Foundation installation was carried out by Seaway7 using its jack-up vessel Seaway Ventus, with the company also progressing inter-array cable installation. Meanwhile, turbine installation is already underway, with the project's 95 turbines featuring 115-metre blades. East Anglia THREE is expected to become fully operational by the end of 2026, generating 1.4 GW of clean electricity - enough to supply more than 1.3 million UK homes and strengthen the country's energy security. The project is a 50:50 joint venture between ScottishPower Renewables and Masdar and represents Masdar's first offshore wind joint venture in the UK with ScottishPower. It is also the second project developed under Masdar and Iberdrola's €15 billion strategic partnership. Around £2 billion is being invested in the UK supply chain, supporting companies involved in foundation design, turbine blade manufacturing, vessel chartering and seabed consultancy.
