SK Hynix over Micron: why it leads AI memory with 50% of HBM revenue

SK Hynix is the better long-term bet on AI memory than Micron Technology, according to one analyst view. The South Korean chipmaker leads the market for high bandwidth memory (HBM), which AI accelerators such as Nvidia's graphics chips need to process large amounts of data quickly. Counterpoint Research says SK Hynix held 50% of global HBM revenue in the second quarter, nearly as much as Samsung and Micron combined. Early investment in advanced packaging and manufacturing gave it a first-mover edge. The company began mass shipments of HBM4 in the second quarter and is developing HBM4E. Custom chips from Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta Platforms, OpenAI, and Anthropic could widen its customer base beyond Nvidia. The author also notes that SK Hynix's forward price-to-earnings valuation remains fairly modest.

SK hynix unveils next-gen AI memory technologies.

SK hynix unveils next-gen AI memory technologies. The company showcased rack-scale AI memory systems, high bandwidth flash and a faster, more efficient CXL memory product at Open Compute's global summit in California. Published October 16, 2026 - 6:15 p.m. SK hynix said Friday that it showcased its next-generation AI memory technologies aimed at expanding the boundaries of AI infrastructure beyond conventional high bandwidth memory. The company presented the technologies at the 2026 OCP Global Summit, held in California from Tuesday to Thursday. The summit is an annual conference organized by the Open Compute Project Foundation that brings together engineers and industry leaders. The Korean chip giant said it divided its exhibition space into two sections. The front section showcased the company's flagship products, while the larger rear section featured memory solutions designed to support next-generation server ecosystems. Kim Ho-sik, a senior vice president at SK hynix, introduced MARS (memory-centric AI rack-scale system), a disaggregated rack-scale architecture designed to coordinate computing and memory resources seamlessly. Kim highlighted progress in high bandwidth flash, a technology aimed at addressing the industry's growing demand for memory capacity. The company also unveiled its second-generation 256-gigabyte memory product based on Compute Express Link 3.2, offering more than twice the bandwidth of its predecessor and an improvement of about 30 percent in energy efficiency.

Solidigm seeks US approval for China chip equipment exports in return for building a New York factory

Solidigm, the flash memory unit of SK Hynix, is seeking US approval to send American chipmaking equipment to its factory in Dalian, China, Reuters reported, citing anonymous sources. The approval would be a condition for building a semiconductor factory in the US. Solidigm is reportedly planning a NAND flash chip plant and considering upstate New York as a site. It wants to install more equipment in spare space at the Dalian factory to boost output. SK Hynix told TechCrunch it is not seeking to expand capacity at the Dalian facility, and that the installation is being done under US government authorisation. Solidigm is said to be preparing for a 2027 US IPO that could raise around $10 billion and value it at up to $100 billion.
