Requirements
  • Must possess current radiographer licensure as required by the state board where services will be provided: a radiographer license through the West Virginia Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Technology Board for West Virginia services; no state license is required in Pennsylvania; and applicable radiographer licenses through the Maryland Board of Physicians or Ohio Board of Radiology for services in those states.
  • Be registered in Radiography by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
  • Be registered in Mammography with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
  • Obtain Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Complete state and federal criminal background checks, if applicable, as required for regulated areas.
  • Prioritize and deal with a variety of situations simultaneously.
  • Interact positively with patients, families, and members of the health care team.
  • Differentiate various shades of gray as depicted on a black-and-white television monitor or photograph.
  • Stand and walk for up to 12 hours a day.
  • Lift, push, and pull up to 10 pounds of weight.
  • Carry items weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Work in an environment with occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, airborne particles, body fluids, toxic or caustic chemicals, and electrical shock risk.
Responsibilities
  • Plan imaging procedures based on patient needs, including all examinations within the job scope.
  • Continually develop skill sets and become competent in all examinations within the job scope defined by leadership.
  • Maintain expertise in anatomy, physiology, and pathology relevant to imaging to optimize procedures and ensure patient care and safety.
  • Position and compress patients accurately for procedures and fully image all breast tissue.
  • Minimize radiation exposure to patients and staff by shielding and correctly selecting exposure factors.
  • Evaluate images for protocol compliance, image density, contrast, detail, positioning, compression, and absence of image artifacts, and ensure proper patient identification appears on every image.
  • Educate patients about mammographic procedures by explaining procedures and answering questions.
  • Document imaging activities accurately and consistently in accordance with American College of Radiology and federal mandates.
  • Engage in problem-solving, crisis management, and systems implementation with physicians, nursing personnel, technical personnel, and support personnel throughout the hospital.
  • Perform mammographic imaging quality-control tests in accordance with the manufacturer’s requirements and document them in the Mammography Quality Control Track module.
  • Perform imaging techniques and patient-care activities in accordance with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Code of Ethics, administrative policies and procedures, Radiology Department policies, Mammography regulations, state and federal regulations, and The Joint Commission guidelines.
  • Report equipment failures immediately upon identification.
  • Maintain a clean, neat, and well-stocked procedure area.
  • Prepare contrast agents, specific pharmaceuticals, sterile trays, and devices for invasive mammographic procedures.
  • Maintain Mammography Quality Standards Act compliance.
