Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience is required.
  • Ability to complete assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze, organize, and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
  • Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures and laboratory safety and quality standards.
Responsibilities
  • Identify, handle, and accession patient samples requiring laboratory testing.
  • Transport specimens and communicate test results timely and accurately.
  • Maintain laboratory files and logs in a neat and accurate manner.
  • Perform specimen processing, including centrifugation, aliquoting, and volume measurement.
  • Maintain adequate inventory levels according to protocol and rotate previous stock when applicable.
  • Participate in performance improvement processes for the department.
  • Maintain the assigned work area in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information according to federal and state guidelines and regulations.
  • Generate patient reports and forward them to the appropriate departments or physicians.
  • Investigate and respond to inquiries or problems related to referral testing.
  • Answer inquiries from the Reference Lab and resolve problems associated with improper or inadequate samples.
  • Answer inquiries from physicians or patient unit personnel regarding specimen requirements.
  • Check packing slips, verify the amount of items received, document receipts, and provide a copy to the supervisor or designee.
  • Serve as a lead or backup when the supervisor is unavailable.
  • Adhere to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguard University assets.
  • Receive and sort clinical laboratory specimens using the Laboratory Information System.
  • Prepare specimens for testing and analysis.
  • Scan and enter specimen and patient information.
  • Troubleshoot specimen-related issues.
  • Issue and return blood products according to laboratory policy and regulatory guidelines.
  • Ensure laboratory equipment is functioning properly and perform minor instrumentation maintenance.
  • Replenish and store test-bench supplies as needed.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Perform reagent and consumable inventory as directed.
  • Respond to telephone inquiries about results.
  • Complete record logs and other administrative duties as requested by the supervisor.
