An investor in Spotify and Revolut has called on Europe to reduce its dependence on American technology. The founder of the venture capital firm Lakestar has raised $300 million to support European startups in the defense technology sector LIGA.net news editor July 17, 19:56 Europe must reduce its dependence on American technology and capital, as this dependence has become a strategic vulnerability. This was stated by Klaus Gommels, founder of the venture capital firm Lakestar stated in an interview with the Financial Times. According to him, the latest confirmation of this was the U.S. actions regarding restrictions on the export of sensitive artificial intelligence models Anthropic. "We need to be as independent as possible, and that applies to both technology and the funding for that technology," said Gommels. In light of these statements, Lakestar announced the creation of a new $300 million fund, the Resilience Fund, which will invest in dual-use companies and defense technologies in Europe and other NATO countries. Among the fund's investors is the British defense company BAE Systems. Klaus Hommels is a German-Swiss venture capitalist, founder, and chairman of the board of directors of Lakestar, one of Europe's most renowned venture capital firms. Lakestar has invested in a number of successful technology companies, including Spotify, Revolut, Skype, Airbnb, Facebook, Palantir, Wise (TransferWise), SumUp, and Glovo. In recent years, Gommels has been actively promoting the idea of strengthening Europe's technological and defense independence. In 2024, he announced his intention to invest more than 100 million euros of his own funds in European defense startups. He also chairs the Geopolitical and Strategic Advisory Board of the NATO Innovation Fund. Last year, Gomels announced his intention to focus on strengthening Europe's resilience, deciding against investing in general venture capital funds. The advisory board of the new foundation includes a former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, former Chief of the British Defense Staff Nicholas Carter, former Chief of the General Staff of the Bundeswehr Volker Wicker, and British tech entrepreneur Martha Lane Fox. According to Gommels, investor interest in defense technologies has surged following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine and increase in military spending European countries. In his view, European defense technology companies should remain under European control, even if American investors participate in their financing. The Ukrainian government, starting in July launched the export of weapons and technology in the Drone Deal format. This will enable the defense industry to earn billions of dollars a year. At the same time, it remains very important for the state to maintain its own defense capabilities to prevent a shortage of weapons. Lakestar has already invested in a number of European defense companies, including Cambridge Aerospace, a British developer of drone interception systems, Helsing, a German drone manufacturer with a valuation of about $18 billion, and the rocket startup Isar Aerospace. Gommels also called on European defense startups to consolidate in order to create larger players capable of competing more successfully for government defense contracts. According to him, Europe's main advantage over China, Iran, and Russia is its ability to mobilize private capital. * During the Ukraine-EU Defense Industry Forum in Kyiv, Ukraine and the European Union signed two documents that open up opportunities for Ukrainian companies access to European programs, grant funding, and joint projects.
German UAV firm Helsing picks West Virginia for first US manufacturing. The company will invest $50 million to open the facility, with an initial focus on manufacturing the HX-2 strike drone, according to Gov. Patrick Morrisey. PARIS - German defense firm Helsing plans to establish its first US defense manufacturing facility and open a new drone production plant in West Virginia, the state's governor revealed on Monday. Helsing will initially invest $50 million to open the facility, according to a press release from the office of Gov. Patrick Morrisey. The release says the facility will start manufacturing Helsing's HX-2 drone. Company executive Jennifer McArdle said at an event in West Virginia announcing the new facility today that the firm plans to produce as many as 2,000 drones a month, according to local media. "Welcoming a global defense technology innovator with battlefield-deployed products like Helsing to Berkeley County is another major milestone for West Virginia," Morrisey said in the release. The company said the facility in Martinsburg - situated in the northeast of the state wedged between Virginia and Maryland - is planned to have initial operating capability by November and full rate production within a year. "West Virginia stood out for its skilled workforce, speed to build, manufacturing heritage, and commitment to strengthening the U.S. industrial base," said McArdle, Helsing's US general manager, adding that the company was "excited to build in Appalachia." The HX-2 is a loitering munition powered by company software that can hit targets like armored vehicles and structures as far as 100 km (62 miles) away, according to the firm. The drone has been used in combat in Ukraine. The German firm, founded in 2021, is headquartered in Munich and has grown rapidly with a focus on autonomous software. Helsing on Monday also announced results of a new funding round that raised $1.8 billion, growing its total valuation to $18 billion. presented by As NATO and European governments accelerate investment in space-based intelligence, decision advantage will depend on how quickly sovereign and commercial capabilities can be fused into a trusted operational picture. Besides its work in autonomous software, the company is chasing other opportunities over in Europe for larger drones like Collaborative Combat Aircraft. At the Berlin Air Show in June, Helsing revealed that it was designing a kinetic attack variant of its in-development CA-1 Europa drone wingman, which is scheduled for first flight in early 2027.
Helsing expands U.S. Market. 14. July 2026 Selecting West Virginia for its first U.S. Resilience factory. July 14, 2026. Helsing, Europe's leading defence technology company, has announced that West Virginia will become the company's first U.S. manufacturing base. The announcement was made alongside the West Virginia Governor, Patrick Morrisey, and extends Helsing's presence in the U.S. strongly. The new West Virginia facility, designed as part of Helsing's global network of Resilience Factories, will produce the HX-2, an advanced, AI-enabled strike drone. The HX-2 is already combat-proven in Ukraine, where thousands of systems are successfully deployed to the front lines. The platform has also undergone extensive testing by allied armed forces, including by the U.S. Army during the exercise Flytrap in Lithuania. Designed for high-volume production and rapid deployment, the HX-2 represents a new generation of affordable precision capabilities built for the challenges of modern combat. Once fully operational, the West Virginia manufacturing base will be capable of producing more than 2000 HX-2 drones per month and have the ability to scale further according to demand. Governor Patrick Morrisey said: "Helsing's decision to establish its first U.S. manufacturing facility in West Virginia is another signal that our state is becoming a destination for advanced manufacturing and defense technology. This investment will create high-skilled jobs, strengthen America's defense industrial base, and demonstrate that West Virginia has the workforce, energy resources, and manufacturing heritage to help lead the next generation of industrial innovation. We're proud to welcome Helsing to the Mountain State." Dr. Jennifer McArdle, the General Manager of Helsing US, added: "Modern deterrence requires advanced technology and the ability to produce it at speed, at scale, and in sustained volumes. The conflicts of today demonstrate that industrial capacity is a critical strategic advantage. With its commitment to innovation, skilled local workforce and competitive infrastructure, West Virginia is the right place for Helsing to start building this industrial capacity in the U.S." The announcement comes as the U.S. moves to strengthen its defence industrial base and increase production capacity for military systems. West Virginia was selected by Helsing following a competitive nationwide evaluation of potential locations, reflecting the state's industrial heritage, skilled workforce, and commitment to rebuilding America's manufacturing capacity.
