- Family physicians must be eligible for certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
- Membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association is required.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification is required.
- Basic Cardiac Life Support certification is required.
- Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient certification is required.
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification is required.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification is required.
- Ensure the delivery of comprehensive primary health care services to patients of all ages and stages of health or illness.
- Be accountable for appropriate workload and practice.
- Maintain continuity of patient care with health care providers within the practice and/or community.
- Provide care and coordinate community-based, secondary, and tertiary-level health care.
- Build the practice to capacity within the first two years.
- Operate within the bylaws, rules, and regulations of the Nova Scotia Health Authority.
- Work toward same-day or next-day access for the practice population.
- Collaborate with other practice team members to best suit the community’s health needs.
- Work with other providers to provide after-hours access and emergency coverage when required.
- Participate in quality-improvement and evaluation activities.
- Use an electronic medical record and record all relevant patient details in a provincially approved electronic medical record accessible to collaborating team members.
- College of Family Physicians of Canada emergency-room certification is considered an asset.
