About the job

Requirements
  • Strong technical foundation and prior experience as a highly capable individual contributor before moving into leadership.
  • Strong understanding of traditional machine-learning and Data Science approaches and newer AI capabilities, including LLM-based systems and generative AI.
  • Strong judgment around build-versus-buy decisions and the ability to assess rapidly evolving technologies pragmatically.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to move fluidly between detailed technical discussions and conversations with senior business and product leaders.
  • Comfortable operating in a small, fast-moving organization where senior leaders remain close to execution.
  • Already changed how you work because of AI; use LLMs and agentic tools day to day as practical tools for accelerating execution, with sound judgment about where they create leverage and where they get in the way.
  • 8+ years of experience building and leading data platform, data engineering, Data Science, machine learning, or AI capabilities in high-growth technology environments.
  • Demonstrated experience architecting and building modern data platforms and production data systems.
  • Meaningful experience applying machine learning and/or AI to real-world product or business problems and taking solutions from experimentation into production.
  • Experience partnering closely with Product teams to identify and deliver technically sophisticated product capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose organizational capability gaps, build new technical capabilities, and recruit senior, specialized technical talent to fill them.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to frequently communicate with others through virtual meeting applications such as Zoom and Google Meet.
  • Must be able to observe and communicate information on a company-provided laptop.
  • Must be able to move up to 10 pounds on occasion.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and own the technical strategy and roadmap for the data platform and AI/ML capabilities, shaping company-level direction and investment priorities with a data and AI perspective.
  • Own company-level KPIs for AI/ML and Data Platform, define meaningful measures, hold accountability for results, and report progress to the executive team.
  • Partner with Product and cross-functional leaders to identify opportunities for AI, machine learning, and Data Science to create customer and business value, and own the technical strategy and capabilities to realize them.
  • Serve as the senior technical leader and thought partner on data, AI, machine learning, and Data Science.
  • Help Product, Engineering, and business leaders evaluate opportunities, understand technical feasibility and tradeoffs, and shape the company's approach to emerging capabilities.
  • Develop a point of view on when traditional machine learning, predictive modeling, generative AI, LLM-based systems, and other approaches are appropriate.
  • Establish principles for building capabilities internally, leveraging third-party platforms or models, or partnering externally.
  • Balance near-term delivery with foundational investments for the longer-term strategy.
  • Establish the technical capabilities to develop, evaluate, deploy, monitor, and continuously improve production AI and machine-learning systems.
  • Translate AI/ML opportunities into well-defined technical initiatives with Product and business leaders, grounded in customer or business outcomes.
  • Guide technical experimentation and prototyping to validate opportunities before significant investment.
  • Establish rigorous approaches to model and system evaluation, experimentation, observability, feedback loops, governance, privacy, security, and responsible AI.
  • Determine the Data Science, ML Engineering, and Applied AI capabilities needed over time and develop an organizational model to support them.
  • Own the architecture and evolution of the centralized data platform and systems that collect, transform, store, govern, and serve company data.
  • Ensure the data platform is reliable, scalable, observable, secure, and straightforward for downstream consumers to use.
  • Establish engineering practices for data quality, testing, lineage, documentation, monitoring, and reliability.
  • Build scalable interfaces and data products that enable analysts, Product, Engineering, and other teams to work effectively with trusted data.
  • Make pragmatic architectural and technology decisions balancing scalability and technical quality with the speed required in a fast-growing company.
  • Ensure platform investments are justified by customer, product, or business needs and avoid unnecessary complexity.
  • Treat analysts embedded in product and business organizations as key Data Platform customers and partners.
  • Partner with analysts and their leaders to understand common needs, remove technical bottlenecks, and improve access to reliable, well-modeled data.
  • Establish shared technical standards, platform capabilities, and ownership models that enable decentralized analytics teams to move quickly without unnecessary fragmentation.
  • Create clear ownership boundaries between the centralized Data Platform organization and embedded analytics teams.
  • Build foundational data capabilities that enable analysts to focus on insights rather than recurring infrastructure or data-quality problems.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the existing Data Platform team while remaining close to technical work.
  • Assess the technical capabilities needed to execute the evolving data and AI strategy.
  • Develop existing team members where appropriate and recruit external talent to fill missing specialized skills or experience.
  • Identify capability gaps proactively rather than scaling solely through headcount.
  • Build specialized capabilities such as Data Science, ML Engineering, and Applied AI as product and business needs warrant.
  • Determine whether capabilities should be centralized, embedded within Product or Engineering, or organized in another model.
  • Develop technical leaders and individual contributors and create an environment characterized by high standards, ownership, curiosity, collaboration, and pragmatic execution.
  • Build an organization that can scale without unnecessary layers or process.
  • Stay close enough to the technology to provide credible technical leadership and make high-quality architecture and engineering decisions.
  • Contribute to system design, architecture, data modeling, prototypes, code, technical evaluations, or production issues when doing so can materially accelerate the team.
  • Engage with emerging AI/ML technologies to develop an informed view of their capabilities, limitations, and relevance to the company.
  • Serve as a technical thought partner to Data Platform engineers, Product engineers, analysts, and senior company leadership.
  • Set a high technical bar while empowering the team to own execution.
  • Use technical depth to simplify problems and help the company avoid underinvestment and unnecessary overengineering.
  • Develop, coordinate, and implement systems, policies, procedures, and productivity standards.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the team to achieve goals and objectives.
  • Oversee planning, execution, and completion of team projects and initiatives.
  • Establish and monitor operational processes and workflows to improve efficiency and productivity.

  • Set team goals, provide guidance, and ensure the team's overall success.
  • Set performance expectations and goals, conduct regular performance evaluations, provide feedback, and address performance issues.
  • Identify team skill gaps and strategies to fill them; support employee development through training, mentoring, and coaching; identify high-potential employees and create succession plans.

Octave launches peer-reviewed WiseMatch Index to match patients with 450K therapists

Octave has launched the WiseMatch Index, a methodology for matching patients with suitable in-network therapists. The index evaluates over 450,000 behavioural health providers nationally using a Clinical Quality Measure that assesses therapeutic alliance, effectiveness, efficiency, and accessibility, alongside patient preferences. The index was independently peer-reviewed by Motive Medical Intelligence. It extends WiseMatch, a platform launched in March 2026 for booking in-network mental healthcare directly through care platforms like insurance directories. WiseMatch currently operates across more than 100,000 providers and is used by healthcare companies representing over 23 million covered lives. Several regional Blue Cross Blue Shield plans are implementing the index to address issues with insurance directories showing unavailable providers.

Octave launches WiseMatch to streamline mental health provider bookings through insurance directories

Octave has launched WiseMatch, a technology platform designed to modernise insurance directories and simplify access to in-network mental health care. The platform enables real-time availability and direct booking within payor directories. WiseMatch addresses a significant access gap, as approximately 40% of patients begin their therapy search through health plan directories, which are often outdated and difficult to navigate. The platform integrates across fragmented behavioural health networks, including electronic health record systems, to provide regularly updated provider information. Tens of thousands of therapists are now connected through WiseMatch via partnerships with mental health practices including Grow Therapy, Rula and SonderMind, as well as behavioural health EHR providers like Valant. The platform allows patients to book appointments whilst enabling providers to manage bookings through existing workflows.

Post thisWith the additional locations, Octave now serves a total of 17 states. The expansion states were selected based on the need for in-network therapists — seven of the 10 new states rank among the lowest in the nation for access to mental health care due to high cost and lack of availability."The key to reducing the critical need for mental health services in the U.S. isn't just about making care more available, but also making sure it's effective. We're seeing too many people dropping out of the system before they see improvement; and on the other side, we're seeing too many people churning within the system and not actually getting better," said Sandeep Acharya, Founder and CEO of Octave."Our model of carefully vetting therapists and delivering consistently high-quality care that's proven to work is what sets Octave apart. We're looking forward to expanding our care model to these new states, and very soon, nationwide," he said.Proven Clinical OutcomesA pioneer of value-based care in mental health, Octave's innovative care model has led to first-of-its-kind partnerships with major national payers
