Position Summary

The Program Director for the Associate of Science in Biomedical Equipment Technology (AS-BMET) serves as the on-site program head responsible for the leadership, academic quality, operational management, and continuous improvement of the BMET program. The Program Director ensures that the program is delivered in full compliance with the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC) Standards of Accreditation, applicable state and federal regulations, and HCI College’s institutional policies. This is a full-time, on-site position responsible for administering all occupational components of the program, supervising faculty, engaging employer partners, and ensuring that graduates achieve the knowledge, technical skills, and professional competencies required for employment as entry-level Biomedical Equipment Technicians (BMETs).

This position satisfies ACCSC’s program-head requirement for each distinct occupational area that leads to an academic degree, and supports ACCSC’s full-time on-site management and administrative capacity requirement.

Minimum Qualifications (ACCSC-Aligned)

Education

• An earned degree at least one academic level higher than the highest credential offered in the BMET program area — i.e., a bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Equipment Technology, Electronics/Electrical Engineering Technology, Clinical Engineering, or a closely related technical field. A master’s degree is strongly preferred.
• Degree must be from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA); credentials will be verified consistent with ACCSC requirements.

Work Experience

• A minimum of four (4) years of related practical work experience in biomedical equipment technology, clinical engineering, healthcare technology management (HTM), or medical-device service/manufacturing, consistent with ACCSC faculty qualifications for technical/occupational courses in an academic associate degree program.
• In exceptional cases, ACCSC permits substitution of a minimum of eight (8) years of outstanding practical experience and documented contributions to the field in lieu of a formal degree at the required level; such substitutions must be justified and documented on an individual basis.

Credentials (Preferred)

• Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET) or equivalent AAMI certification.
• Additional relevant credentials such as CRES, CLES, CHTM, CompTIA A+/Network+, or manufacturer service certifications.

Administrative Ability

• Demonstrated ability to administer the occupational components of a technical degree program, including curriculum oversight, faculty supervision, laboratory operations, and employer/advisory-board engagement.

Other

• Full-time, on-site availability as required by ACCSC’s management and administrative capacity standards.
• Ability to teach in the program at the same academic level as the courses assigned.
• Satisfactory background check consistent with clinical and employer partnership requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Academic Leadership and Program Head Duties

• Serve as the on-site program head for the AS-BMET program, providing day-to-day leadership for all occupational components.
• Ensure the program’s mission, educational objectives, program learning outcomes, and course-level outcomes are current, published, and consistently implemented.
• Administer curriculum design, sequencing, textbook selection, laboratory activities, and program length to ensure graduates achieve entry-level BMET competencies.
• Maintain alignment with recognized industry standards, including AAMI CBET body of knowledge, FDA, Joint Commission, NFPA 99, and IEC 80001 where applicable.
• Curriculum Development and Continuous Improvement
• Lead ongoing review, evaluation, and revision of the BMET curriculum, incorporating input from the Program Advisory Committee (PAC), employers, faculty, students, and graduates.
• Conduct and document annual program effectiveness assessment consistent with ACCSC standards on educational effectiveness.
• Establish and monitor benchmarks for student retention, graduation, credentialing (CBET), and graduate employment in the field, and implement corrective action when benchmarks are not met.

Faculty Supervision, Assessment, and Development

• Recruit, hire, orient, supervise, evaluate, and develop full-time and adjunct BMET faculty.
• Verify and maintain documentation of faculty academic credentials and prior related work experience to demonstrate compliance with ACCSC standards.
• Ensure faculty meet the four-year related practical experience and related-degree requirement (at least at the level of the course taught), or that documented exceptional-experience substitutions meet ACCSC requirements.
• Design and implement a documented, ongoing faculty assessment and professional development plan appropriate to the size and scope of the program.
• Support continuity of instruction through the reasonable retention of educational administrative staff and faculty.

Program Advisory Committee (PAC)

• Establish and maintain an active PAC composed of employers, practicing BMETs/clinical engineers, and other subject-matter experts.
• Convene the PAC no less than annually (typically twice per year), document meetings and recommendations, and integrate committee input into curriculum, equipment, and program improvements.

Laboratory, Equipment, and Learning Resources

• Ensure classrooms, laboratories, equipment, tools, medical devices, test instruments, software, and supplies are sufficient in quantity and current with industry practice.
• Maintain inventory, preventive maintenance, electrical-safety testing, and calibration records for program-owned medical and test equipment.
• Coordinate with the library/learning resources function to ensure texts, digital resources, and OER meet program needs.

Instructional Delivery and Teaching

• Teach assigned BMET courses in accordance with ACCSC faculty qualifications, modeling effective classroom and laboratory instruction.
• Monitor course delivery, syllabi consistency, grading practices, and assessment quality across all sections.

Student Success, Advising, and Externship/Capstone Management

• Oversee student advising, academic progress monitoring, intervention, and retention practices specific to the BMET program.
• Direct the BMET externship/capstone (e.g., BMET Field Experience) — including affiliation agreements, site vetting, preceptor qualifications, student placement, monitoring, and evaluation. 
• Support students in preparing for AAMI CBET and related industry credentials.

Employer Engagement and Graduate Outcomes

• Cultivate and maintain relationships with hospitals, health systems, independent service organizations (ISOs), and medical-device OEMs to secure externship sites and employment opportunities.
• Track and document graduate employment in the field consistent with ACCSC reporting requirements and HCI’s Institutional Effectiveness Plan.

Compliance, Reporting, and Documentation

• Ensure the BMET program operates in continuous compliance with ACCSC Standards of Accreditation, the U.S. Department of Education, the Florida Commission for Independent Education (CIE), and any other applicable regulatory bodies.
• Contribute to Self-Evaluation Reports, Annual Reports, program applications, substantive change submittals, on-site evaluation preparation, and responses to Commission actions. 
• Maintain accurate program records including catalogs, enrollment agreements, syllabi, faculty files, PAC minutes, assessment reports, and equipment inventories.

Marketing, Admissions, and Consumer Information Support

• Review BMET-related marketing, catalog, and consumer-information content for accuracy and consistency with ACCSC advertising and disclosure standards.
• Support admissions with program information sessions, applicant screening for program fit, and pre-enrollment advising.

Budget and Operations

• Participate in annual budget development for the BMET program (personnel, equipment, supplies, professional development, PAC, marketing) and manage program spending against the approved budget.
• Recommend capital investments in medical equipment, test instruments, and laboratory upgrades.

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Strong working knowledge of biomedical equipment operation, testing, calibration, and repair across major device categories (patient monitoring, therapeutic, diagnostic imaging, laboratory, and networked medical devices).

Working familiarity with medical-device cybersecurity, HL7/DICOM, CMMS platforms, and healthcare technology management practices.

Demonstrated understanding of ACCSC accreditation standards and processes, Title IV compliance, and Florida CIE requirements.

Effective leadership, coaching, and conflict-resolution skills.

Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to prepare board-ready reports, curriculum documents, and accreditation submissions.

Proficiency with Microsoft 365, learning management systems, and institutional SIS/CRM/ERP platforms.

Commitment to student success, ethical practice, and continuous improvement.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Full-time, on-site role at the West Palm Beach campus, with periodic travel to clinical/employer partner sites, PAC meetings, and professional conferences.

Regular activity in classroom and laboratory environments, including handling medical devices, test equipment, and small hand tools.

Occasional evening or weekend hours to support classes, events, and industry engagements.

Ability to lift and move equipment up to 40 pounds with reasonable accommodation.

Performance Standards and Evaluation

The Program Director is evaluated annually by the Director of Education / Chief Academic Officer based on:

• Student retention, graduation, credentialing, and in-field employment outcomes measured against ACCSC benchmarks and the institutional effectiveness plan.
• Quality and timeliness of accreditation and regulatory submissions.
• Faculty performance, professional development, and retention.
• PAC engagement and integration of employer feedback.
• Program budget stewardship and equipment/lab readiness.
• Contribution to HCI College’s mission, culture, and strategic goals.
